Cardinal Justin Rigali joins the talk-radio fray tonight with the debut of a one-hour monthly call-in show on WPHT (1210) at 7 o'clock, joining such movers on the station as District Attorney Lynne Abraham and Police Commissioner Chuck Ramsey. Nighttime talker Dom Giordano, who will moderate, says the archbishop has been on before and "doesn't mind the huge issues. . . . He hasn't pushed us back on anything." His next show, fit around his travel schedule, will be Dec. 15. He also tapes messages in English and Spanish for the Catholic Channel on Sirius satellite radio, and for the archdiocese's Spanish-language shows for EWTN Global and Mega 1310 AM. For many years, Rigali's predecessor, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, hosted a weekly show on a now-defunct AM station.

The decision to move the studios of KWMU off the UMSL campus to a new building at Grand Center is still on track, despite the school’s belt tightening.
Within a week of the announcement of the school’s plans, University President Gary Forsee released a letter to all UM campuses asking each chancellor “to review and prioritize every line item of expense and capital to be sure that we can provide resources for the future.”
St. Louis campus spokesman Bob Samples told ACC the fundraising effort for the new building is continuing. The estimated cost of the building is $12 million. UMSL is committing $2.5 toward the project and plans to raise the remainder in private gifts. So far, donations total about $4.5 million. The new facility is planned for the lot next to the KETC studios on Olive in Midtown.
Samples said that UMSL has retained architects to begin planning the new facility, but no firm date for construction exists. He said ideally UMSL would have all of the private funding pledged, if not collected, before seeking bids and moving ahead on the studio construction project. |
