Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce and City Assessor Ed Bushmeyer are the featured presenters at the general membership meeting of the Grand Oak Hill Community Corporation on Wednesday, March 21.
The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Grand Oak Hill Community Center, 4168 Juniata.
Ms. Joyce will speak about the “Myths and Facts of the CSI Effect.” The CSI television shows, while entertaining, create unrealistic expectations about the powers of the criminal justice system.
Mr. Bushmeyer will address issues regarding the reassessment of real property that will take place this year. He will try to help residents understand what options they have if they feel their new assessed values are too high.
The Webster University Film Series is hosting a fundraiser for Poetry Scores' (formerly Hoobellatoo) "Blind Cat Black".
This locally produced film features St. Louis rapper Toyy Davis and a cast of locals including Jason Wallace Triefenbach, Don Erickson, Ray Brewer, K. Curtis Lyle, Stefene Russell, Brad Young and many more.
The film is directed by Chris King, writer and editor of the St. Louis American, shot by Chizmo and edited by Aaron AuBuchon.
From the press release: "We are billing 'Blind Cat Black' as 'surrealist sexy hip-hop zombie cinema from St. Louis,' which pretty much sums it up. The film is being shot to the existing musical score to an epic modern Turkish poem about the Istanbul underworld."
"In the auditorium, we will screen rough cuts of select scenes from the film, and the director will spiel about the fine art of filming a love scene on top of a pile of zombies. Though we will let all of our naked footage roll at the Bottleworks, most of the benefit event will be dominated by the local musical performance group SHed SHot, which will premier its own short film, 'Legendary Sand,' and lead a live musical score to the German Expressionist silent film classic 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.'"
(not to be confused with the great 90's film, "Cabinet of Dr. Ramirez" by Mikhail Baryshnikov and Peter Sellers, though it pays homage.)
The night will kickoff at 8 p.m. at the Winifred Moore Auditorium, 470 East Lockwood on the campus of Webster U. Suggested donation is $5. It's a steal at any price so feel free to contribute more.
Following the event, Poetry Scores will host an afterparty at the Schlafly Bottleworks, 7260 Southwest Avenue in Maplewood, where the beer will flow (no drinks at Webster's auditorium) and Poetry Scores will screen some of the rough footage they have so far.
Note: This event was Saturday night, March 10.
tonight will be attended by the folks who have been protesting his office lately, asking him to commit to no more war funding.

The Council received the report of approval from the Planning Commission last week, which was referred to the Committee of the Whole by Sixth District Councilman John Campisi. Councilman Odenwald stated, “I feel that there are several issues of concern relating to the proposed development that warrant committee review of the proposal and an opportunity for all parties to present their views to the members of the County Council.” Issues of concern raised as a result of the density of the proposed development include traffic safety on Gravois Rd., flooding potential for the Affton Athletic Association and Grant’s Trail, and future expansion opportunities for Cor Jesu Academy.

What makes a church, synagogue, temple or mosque a "good neighbor?" Is it the programs they offer to children and families? The beauty or historic importance of their buildings? The advocacy of their members for those in need?
There are more than 300,000 religious congregations in the U.S., and more than $66 billion is given to them annually, about 48 percent of all private philanthropic giving. Recent federal policy initiatives have been designed to tap into this "faith-based" resource, and stories abound of impressive efforts by churches and other houses of workshop to overcome social problems, especially in urban areas. But is it reasonable to expect that every religious congregation is well-positioned to step in where government has feared (or failed) to tread?
Join us on Thursday, September 8, at 3:00 p.m. for a panel discussion on " What Makes a Church a Good Neighbor?" The presentation will draw upon two recent St. Louis studies that focus on the impact and contributions of religious congregations on two areas of community concern: neighborhood stability and housing services.
The seminar is free and open to the public. Participants may park in the Continuing Education spaces in Lot C. For more information, call (314) 516-5276.

From Margie Newman and Amanda Doyle, Fundraising Co-Chairs, Downtown Defense Fund.
The City of St. Louis, the State of Missouri and the OPO project developers have filed a lawsuit against two downtown residents, alleging malicious prosecution -- and seeking actual damages exceeding $1.5 million, plus punitive damages "in an amount sufficient to deter said defendants and others from like conduct."
Should the City, State and developers prevail, these two individuals could lose all of their assets. Just to defend themselves will cost tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs, even if lawyers donate some services.
A fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 25, 7:30 p.m. at Gallery Urbis Orbis, 419 N. Tenth Street. Bring a check in any amount, and enjoy music and good food and the company of people who care about our architectural heritage. No need to purchase tickets -- but please do RSVP to mmnewman@earthlink.net so we can plan refreshments.
If you can't make the fundraiser, send your check payable to Downtown Defense Fund, and mail it to:

Missouri Pro-Vote is helping lead a coalition of nearly two dozen Missouri groups in a protest over President Bush's Social Security privatization efforts.
President Bush is the star attraction at a $2,000-per-plate fundraising dinner for Sen. Jim Talent's re-election campaign on Thursday, June 2nd. The dinner is being held at the Millennium Hotel downtown.
The groups plan to be there by 4:30 p.m. to be there when the President arrives to demonstrate their opposition to his plans.
"People are very impassioned," said Margarida Jorge the St. Louis Program Director for Missouri Pro Vote. "The social security issue is a really hot issue for people."
The Missouri coalition is also working with the national group Americans United to Protect Social Security as well as MoveOn PAC. Their focus is to force legislators from their districts to take a stand on Social Security and to go on the record either supporting the President's plan or not. It's the least they can do for their constituents, says Jorge.
Jorge said several groups have tried to get Sen. Talent to go on record, but he has not responded to their invitations to speak to them.
"This is a really tough issue," said Jorge. "A lot of people want to stay in the closet. Don't piss off your constituents, don't piss off the President."
They have made some headway with Missouri Representative Jo Ann Emerson (R-08), who is the Representative with the highest number of Social Security recipients in her district. She has said that she will not support a plan that is fiscally irresponsible and adds trillions of dollars to the U.S. national debt.
Recent reports of the President's waning political capital aside, the groups are focusing on events featuring the President and his speeches about privatization. They realize that waning public support for the President's signature plan can help pressure Representatives and Senators to come out on one side of the issue or the other.
"It seems no matter what [the President] does or where he goes the plan becomes less popular," said Jorge. "People don’t want to give up what they are entitled to and what they have earned."
