City Aldermen Roll Up their Sleeves for Cancer Victims

In honor of our beloved colleagues, Colleen Sondermann and Dan Kirner, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen will be hosting a
car wash/fundraiser to benefit cancer patients living in St. Louis.

Money raised is going to the Peregrine Society, which provides much needed help to cancer patients (medical supplies, transportation, prescription drug assistance). Peregrine receives NO local, state or federal funding. All money comes from generous, private donations.

We all know how bravely Colleen and Dan battled against their illnesses. There are thousands more in St. Louis who are fighting every day and many of them are in desperate need of assistance!

This car wash will be a chance for all of us at the Board to come together, roll up our sleeves and give back to our constituents. Besides, how often do you get your elected officials to wash your car for you?!

WHAT: Aldermanic Car Wash/Fundraiser
WHEN: Saturday, June 5th 11am to 1pm
WHERE: Carpenters’ District Council Parking Lot
(1419 Hampton Ave)

For more info contact Matt Murphy in the Aldermanic President’s Office at (314) 589-6842

Federer and universal health insurance

Arch Pundit told me about this. Here is the press release from the Jeff Smith campaign.

**************FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE******************
May 23rd, 2004--- 3rd District Congressional candidate Jeff Smith (D-St. Louis County) strongly condemns Republican Bill Federer for comparing a single payer system of universal health insurance to Nazi genocide.
At the Marine Villa neighborhood candidate forum, at St. Alexius hospital on St. Louis City’s South Side, Republican Bill Federer answered a question about universal health insurance by saying that the Nazi Germany was a socialist society that operated a single payer healthcare system until government revenue fell, at which point the Nazi’s began to slaughter the retarded and handicapped.
Smith said he had never heard anything quite so absurd as Federer’s comparison of proposals to improve the healthcare and quality of life of 44 million uninsured Americans to the Nazi slaughter of 12 million Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, mentally retarded, handicapped, and other so called “undesirables,”
“I cannot believe that in 2004, I heard a candidate from a major party compare ideas about improving healthcare for the 44 million Americans who have no access to insurance to a methodical system of slaughter. The radical right wing in this country is so brainwashed by their hatred of government that Bill Federer legitimately seems to believe that subsidized healthcare led to the organized murder of millions.”
Smith continued, “Republicans like Bill Federer have no qualms about using the power of the state to spy on what library books you can read or to get between a woman and her doctor or to subsidize multi-national corporations that send jobs overseas. But the minute someone proposes helping the working poor and improving people’s quality of life, all of a sudden the Nazi’s are racing down Kingshighway. I have never heard priorities that upside down.”

Candidates' websites

To continue on this theme for another day.

I guess every candidate decides that they must have have a website, and then for some candidates that's as far as they get.

Take a look at Bekki Cook's web site. Especially where she stands on the issues and where her upcoming events are or, if I want to support her, and get an action kit.

I'm picking on Bekki Cook for no good reason. I haven't given a lot of thought to who I'll vote for for Lieutentant Governor, but her primary is 75 days away. Shouldn't the "issues" page have at least one issue on it?

Good quarter coming from Carnahan?

Russ Carnahan told the 8th Ward Independent Democrats last night that his fundraising was closing in on $500,000. Through last quarter he has only raised $370,000 (including his $50,000 loan). So it sounds like he's already around $100,000 for this quarter. With still a month left, that'd be pretty good. Of course the proof will be in the filings on July 15.

The only other 3rd CD candidates there were Favazza and Karll. An interesting place for Karll to be campaigning, though I'm happy she was there.

No November ballot proposal from the Symphony

Dear Member of Citizens for the St. Louis Symphony Ballot Proposal --

The Executive Committee of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra has
decided not to pursue a ballot proposal to ask voters to support adding
the Symphony to the Zoo-Museum District.

A year ago the Symphony polled the community and was encouraged by the
response. It was so encouraging that we formed a coalition to pursue
asking voters for support of the Symphony through a property tax. Over
the past year, the environment has changed. Our recent polling indicates
that while there is still substantial support for the Symphony, voters
are worried about other things. People are concerned about the
uncertainties of the economy, world issues, state and local budget
deficits, and the funding of public schools. This does not mean that
the image of the Symphony has gone down, but that voters have other -
and more pressing -- priorities.

The Symphony has concluded the risks of mounting a campaign this
November are too great. Asking voters to make a very hard choice right
now could jeopardize all of the positive feelings the community now has
about the Symphony as evidenced by the Taylor matching funds, the
Robertson announcement and the positive media stemming from it, and the
1,000 businesses and individuals like you who signed on as members of
our coalition.

While the decision is disappointing, the Symphony's first commitment is
to an orchestra that is both artistically excellent and an active
community partner. For the Symphony, this decision means that it will
continue to rely on friends and donors to help the Symphony meet the
challenge of long-term financial stability. The Symphony will need to
aggressively fundraise to sustain the music education programs for
children and free community concerts that so many enjoy.

We are grateful for your membership in our coalition and look forward to
your ongoing support of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Robert L. Virgil
President
Citizens for the St. Louis Symphony Ballot Proposal

Press Release from KC

News from City Hall

Mayor Kay Barnes
29th Floor, City Hall
Kansas City, Missouri
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 12, 2004
Contact: Lara Schopp, (816) 513-3503

Mayor Barnes Announces Plans for New Downtown Arena

Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes today announced the plan for a new $250 million arena in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, nearly half of which will be privately financed through partnerships with AEG, Sprint Corporation and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The remainder of the financing will be composed of a combination of tax credit financing, hotel and car rental license fees, and user fees.

The state-of-the-art 18,000 to 20,000-seat arena will be located between 13th and 15th Streets and Grand and Oak Streets downtown, and will serve as an anchor on the eastern edge of the new Kansas City Live entertainment/retail/restaurant district currently under development by the Cordish Company. The new arena is envisioned as a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week venue which will feature restaurants and retail activity, in addition to housing the new offices of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. The NABC is expected to provide $10,000,000 in financing.

In addition, AEG, one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment presenters, will serve as a partner with the City of Kansas City in the development, operation and management of the new arena. AEG has indicated that it will make a $50 million commitment to the project if the initial phase projections are confirmed by due diligence, and will also assist the City with the attraction of an anchor tenant for the arena.

Sprint Corporation has signed a letter of intent with the City of Kansas City for the naming rights for the new arena. AEG is advising the City in further discussions with Sprint Corporation for these naming rights.

The public portion of the financing package will not require a general tax increase, but will require Kansas City voters to approve tourism and travel related fees. This includes increases in the hotel license fees of $1.50 per night, and car rental license fees of $3.50 per day plus 50 cents pr day for convention and tourism marketing. An ordinance will be introduced at Thursday’s Council legislative session to place this issue on the August 3rd, 2004 ballot. Public testimony will be taken at the Council’s Finance Committee meeting on Wednesday, May 19th, and the Council must act on the ordinance by May 20th.

“Today’s announcement is another major step forward in the revitalization of downtown Kansas City,” Barnes said. “The combination of the new arena with the H&R Block world headquarters and Kansas City Live, plus the Performing Arts Center will create a spectacular new district downtown with something for everyone, from those living here in the metropolitan area to visitors to Kansas City. I am thrilled that so many prestigious partners have come together with the City of Kansas City to make the new arena a reality.”

Timothy J. Leiweke, president and CEO of AEG, said, “As a Kansas City resident of many years and someone who has continued to follow the growth of this great city, it is my impression that, although a world-class city in nearly every aspect, Kansas City has fallen behind the rest of the country as it relates to facilities for sports and entertainment. Mayor Barnes is clearly a visionary for recognizing that the development of a state-of-the-art arena in a city's urban core has time and again proven to be a true economic juggernaut. AEG is proud to be part of this vision and this community and our entire organization looks forward to making this vision a reality for all involved.”

Gary Forsee, chairman and CEO of Sprint, said, “Having a prosperous, vibrant downtown ensures that our region will continue to attract new visitors and tourists and improve the economic viability of the area. The Sprint Center offers us a great opportunity to promote both our brand and our commitment to Greater Kansas City. We are honored to have our name on a signature entertainment venue in what we believe is one of this nation’s greatest cities.”

Barnes anticipates that a request for qualifications for the design of the new arena will be issued in mid-June, with responses expected back to the City by mid-August. The arena will be planned to be “National Hockey League and National Basketball Association-ready,” and will also be designed to accommodate concerts and other entertainment and sports events, as well as ancillary convention space.

Barnes also extended special thanks to the majority land owners in the area of the proposed site, Tom McDonnell of DST and Crosby Kemper III of UMB bank. The Mayor acknowledged McDonnell for his vision in acquiring parcels of land in the downtown loop for future development such as the arena. In addition, she thanked Kemper for his willingness to enter discussions to make his property available to the City for construction of the arena.

The location provides easy access to thousands of existing parking spaces available to the public. More than 15,000 parking spaces exist within a five-minute walk from the proposed arena site, and nearly 35,000 spaces are available within a ten-minute walk from the site.

Upon completion and opening of the new arena, which is expected in early 2007, Kemper Arena will become a premier venue for equestrian and live stock events year-round, in conjunction with the America Royal Association. The Board of the American Royal has recently commissioned a feasibility study and master plan for both Kemper Arena and Hale Arena to develop a first class facility designed specifically for a top flight livestock, equine, agriculture entertainment and festival district in the Central Industrial District. This study should be completed in 90 to 120 days.

“I also want to thank Mark Ernst of H&R Block and Blake Cordish of the Cordish Company, neither of whom could be here today,” Barnes said. “They more than anyone realize that a new arena as part of the entertainment district is one of the final pieces toward fulfilling our dream of fully revitalizing the downtown loop.”

Meeting about Lead progress

Please plan to attend a special HEJ-STL meeting, Thursday May 13, 7 p.m. at Prince Hall, 4411 N. Newstead.

The City recently penned a new Lead Safe St. Louis Plan. How far is the City from making the Plan a reality? How will the Mayor's budget cuts affect the Plan? Where does the plan need work? Our challenge now is determining the extent to which they are meeting the goals and where they are falling short and what can be done to ensure continued progress in protecting children.

The City's new lead czar, Jeanine S. Arrighi, has agreed to come and help address these questions.

Hubbard unopposed in the 58th

Rodney Hubbard is unopposed in the 58th District.

Thanks to Kathleen Youngblood at Senator Bond's office for catching that error in our latest issue.

But because there is a local angle, take a look at the top contributors so far this election cycle. You'll see lots of local (or formerly local) names - SBC, Boeing, Bank of America.

Also, Saturday morning the streets of South Grand were blocked off. Seems that presidential candidate John Kerry dropped by South City Diner to have some breakfast.
