STL in Progressive

This tid-bit comes to us compliments of Thomas Crone

St. Louis Police Department's arresting people for riding without bicycle licenses makes the cover story of the February issue of Progressive.

Dan(n) Green is mentioned in the article. Green designs and constructs Arch City Chronicle newspaper stands, one of which you can find at People's Coffee/The Commonspace.

City Charter change - 1957

APRIL 17
LECTURE

Race, Class, and "Civic Progress:" The St. Louis NAACP and the 1957 City Charter Flight Clarence Lang, University of Michigan

FREE Lecture--10 a.m. Lee Auditorium, Missouri History Museum

In the 1950s, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People spearheaded a grassroots campaign to block the passage of the 1957 City Charter. This NAACP-led coalition opposed the charter’s lack of civil rights protections, and the absence of fair employment practice guarantees in the civil service code. Anti-charter activists viewed plans to reorganize the Board of Aldermen as an effort to undercut the burgeoning electoral influence of an expanding Black populace. This movement marked the beginnings of the modern Civil Rights Movement in St. Louis. Join Clarence Lang, doctoral candidate from the University of Michigan, as he examines the role of the NAACP, and the battle to defeat the charter. The NAACP’s effort announced the beginnings of a postwar local movement for better employment, civil rights and Black electoral power — a movement rooted in a working-class base and direct action strategy.

Street report from Iowa

Street report from Iowa
-- 1/31/04
by Steven Fitzpatrick Smith

Iowa was the scene of the world’s attention for the start of the Democratic candidates push for the White House began. Comprehension of this process was difficult not only from the massive amounts of coverage, but also from a first hand view at the spectacle of democracy.

Saint Louis had its presence known in the neighbor to the north with a leading candidate making noise. However, many omens foretold the fate of the Gephardt campaign in the days prior to the caucus. Associating with winners is always a great way to bring momentum to the campaign trail. Then there is the Gephardt strategy, employed by the genius minds of yesterday of the Gephardt campaign. How does one pick up to steam toward victory? By holding a “Rockin’ to Victory” rally in Davenport the Saturday prior to the Caucus with an idol sure to cataleptically rouse the hearts and minds of the masses. The ship was clearly headed towards the path of yesterday once the word got out that the rally superstar was fellow yesterday’s loser Michael Bolton. "Dick Gephardt is exactly Michael Bolton's type of guy," noted the on the pulse campaign manager Steve Murphy.
