Ward by ward breakdown in excel here.
I'm curious how the 20th only had 658 voters for Reed/Shrew, but for Schmit/Gondolfi there were 676.

Posted by Clark on Wed., Mar 7, 2007 at 2:09 PMVery interesting data. Thanks for posting it, Dave.
The percentage of the vote between north, south, and central portions of the city are pretty consistent with what I have seen in other elections. The southside wards produced about 44% of the vote, which is two or three points lower than I would normally expect, and the central corridor wards produced about 21% of the vote, which is two or three points higher than I would expect. This is probably due to the high turnout in the 6th Ward aldermanic race and the Republican primary in the 12th Ward.
In 2002 Shrewsbury and Krewson essentially split the north side vote 50/50. Shrewsbury lost the majority of his northside voters this time, taking about 20%. He did slightly better on the southside than he did against Krewson. But Reed took 30% of the vote in south St. Louis, and Shrewsbury wasn't able to run up the kinds of margins in his base to off-set Reed's victory in the central corridor and the northside.

So whites on the southside will vote for a black if they think he or she is better. I guess that puts the myth to rest about white folks not voting black.

Yellow = Shrewsbury
Blue = Reed
The visual would be more compelling (and useful) with shades of colors. Ward votes are not like the Electoral College, so a Red State/Blue State analysis is insufficient.
