It's well known that Pat Dougherty is Jim Shrewsbury's best friend. I respect Pat Dougherty for being loyal and sticking up for his little friend, but how laughable is this desperate email? It's obvious that Mr. Dougherty didn't do his homework on the information in the literature.
I also received the literature in the mail and read the coverage of it on Urban Review. Mr. Patterson of Urban Review wrote "the St. Louis Post-Dispatch did indeed run the above headline for a article on page B4 on 10/30/2006." And, Mr. Dougherty's buddy, Jim Shrewsbury, did deny necessary funding to the City's Prosecutor to keep criminals off our streets. There is nothing incorrect, misleading or dirty in stating that.
Pat Dougherty is a good man and has served the city well. I just wish he had done the homework on this issue and his good friend before sending this email.
Posted by very disappointed on Thu., Feb 22, 2007 at 11:25 AMI heard Jim on 90.7 the other day. He said that he sponsored the budget lines for the circuit attorney and even gave his car to her office. It sounds like he is supporting the office if you ask me. I don't think you can blame the crime problem on any one person, which is what Reed is trying to do. How laughable is it that Reed didn't even include his name or any information about the election in that mail piece?
Posted by very disappointed in very disappointed on Thu., Feb 22, 2007 at 11:39 AMI never received Reed's mailer.
Did he send it out on the northside?

You probably did received the mailing. The problem is that it looks like an advertisement for the Post-Dispatch and threw it out.
Posted by Confusedcitizen on Thu., Feb 22, 2007 at 2:15 PM"I heard Jim on 90.7 the other day. He said that he sponsored the budget lines for the circuit attorney and even gave his car to her office."
Typical of Jim's approach to public policy. The money problems in the circuit attorney's office were well-publicized and well-known. Shrewsbury thinks he can say a sound bite "I even gave them my car" and that the public will look no further. He doesn't respect the intellect of the public nor does he care about the needs of city residents who live outside of his neighborhood.
Posted by Mary Eileen on Thu., Feb 22, 2007 at 6:44 PMPat doesn't make such endorsements without thoroughly thinking about it. Yes, they have been friends for many years. Jim supported Pat very early in his career as he has done with many other well respected politicians over the years. I heard the 90.7 interview as well. He indicated that there is much more involved in the budget issue than just the money for that office.
He mentioned that he has always supported that office in the past but the requested amount was too much. Understand all of each issue before you make generalized comments!
Posted by BNB on Thu., Feb 22, 2007 at 7:11 PMYes BNB, there WAS more to the issue. Shrewsbury's staff openly admitted the budget dispute was "political payback" for Jennifer Joyce, presumably because she supported Krewson against Shrewsbury in President's last race.
All well and good for Shrewsbury to be against Joyce but she wasn't the one he was punishing with these moves. It was the other people in the office and, most importantly, the citizens who need aggressive prosecution of criminals.
Posted by Mary Eileen on Thu., Feb 22, 2007 at 10:30 PMDOESN'T ANYONE REMEMBER Jennifer Joyce wanting to hire county lawyer's only and Wwhy can't they Live in our Neighborhoods ????Wouldn't they prosecute more passionatly to clean up St Louis if they faced the same things the taxpayer's do???My Vote goes to Jim and Thanks Pat your a lovely thoughtful family and with so many endorsing alderperson's getting separated, or faking their marriages(gregali),divorced(Florida) FAMILY VALUES DO COUNT......
Posted by REMEMBER on Fri., Feb 23, 2007 at 12:42 AMRemember:
Talking about county lawyers...do YOU remember that Jim Shrewsbury MOVED his law firm out of the city and into the county? And then he plays petty politics with OUR safety by underfunding our prosecutor! THIS is why the majority of Aldermen and elected officials say its time for Jim to go.
Posted by Jim's Got to Go on Fri., Feb 23, 2007 at 10:26 AMright, and since Jim lives in the city he still pays the earnings tax, so it doesn't matter where his office is. Lawyers do not have to pay a business tax to the city. If anything, this resolves any conflict of interest that Jim might have by keeping his practice separate from his city job. Kudos to you, Mr. Shrewsbury.
Posted by Jim Should Stay on Fri., Feb 23, 2007 at 12:09 PMI was working on a case last year where a victim explained that she wouldn't have been able to get to court and testify without the ride she got from the city. A ride she got in Mr. Shrewsbury's city-owned car.
Now that is a result I can put a face on! Thanks Jim!
IF you needed a probate lawyer of which Jim is one you have to be completely trustful of them and I am 100% with Jim on his work ethics and his deep concern for St.Louisans...Why don't more alderpersons have such ethics as Remember said????
Thanks you Jim for all you have done to make St.Louis safer. As far as Reed he said at a recent ward meeting we need more jails for the swinging doors AT JENNIFER jOYCE'S OFFICE (14th ward)....Then why build LOFTS and BIG DEVELOPMENT like Reed loves? STAY WITH JIM YOU'LL BE THANKFUL ANOTHER 4 YRS.......
Obviously, Retta Crawford (CASE IN POINT/REMEMBER) has some experience with Jim's law practice. I don't know if she is a client or just a friend of Jim's. So, I would like to thank her for pointing out that he does practice law in the office he moved to the county, rather than being our Aldermanic President full time. Thanks, Retta and Jim!
