Unscientific it may be, but there are a lot of Bauer signs on McCausland between Clayton and Manchester. Perhaps more than there were before the 2005 special election in which he was ousted following a contentious and litigious recall campaign.
Visibility? Of course. McCausland gets the signs because of the traffic and thus may be a wildly inaccurate evaluation of support.
That said, there were a lot of Waterhouse signs in 2005, there are only a couple now. Could be nothing, but Bauer has been running for alderman for a long time.
Update: Chuck Miller, 24th ward committeeman, responds in the comments. "On the surface, it looks like Mr. Bauer is winning the "sign war." After a little critical thinking, you realize that many of the Bauer signs are in front of rental properties where the owner lives out of town, on vacant lots, or placed at property lines where you aren't sure whose lot the sign is on." Bauer has some support, but I have had more than a few calls from people saying a Bauer sign "appeared" in their yard without their permission.
Plus, Bauer has been busy attaching leaflets on 24th Ward doors attacking Alderman Waterhouse. Bauer is a take-no-prisoners campaigner, and he hasn't let the truth get in the way of a good leaflet.
I think you have to keep in mind that 24th Ward voters remember we recalled Bauer because of his attempt to abuse eminent domain and allow a large convenience store to be built when the neighbors didn't want it. You also have to keep in mind that Bauer continues to sue some of his former constituents (SLAPP lawsuits). He also has a case pending with the Office of the Attorney General that was forwarded from the Missouri Ethics Commission as a result of his shenanigans in the last election.
Back to the point of the original post, you also must remember that old political axiom: Signs don't vote. On Election Day, I am confident the 24th Ward voters will do just as the ward organization has done and support Alderman Bill Waterhouse.

Posted by Chuck Miller on Wed., Feb 14, 2007 at 10:12 AMBauer supporters are not only good at putting up signs - they are also excellent at taking down signs.... the ones that say Waterhouse. They have even had the nerve to take down those huge big signs that are like mini-billboards. But it's all part of the Bauer election strategy...lie, cheat and steal.
Posted by margaret campbell on Wed., Feb 14, 2007 at 10:28 AMFirst Dave Drebs made the big mistake of saying Tom Bauer hadn't established a current campaign committee, when in fact he had and he was NOT in violation of state law.
Now comes Chuck Miller's blog saying Tom Bauer has pending charges and that the Attorney General is prosecuting is "another BIG LIE". I personally talked to the Attorney General office and they told me "Mr.Bauer is the cleanest public servant in the state of Missouri." This was a false nuisence compalit that got this rumor started. I guess the next BIG LIE will come from Waterhouse.
Don't these guys ever learn ! In kindergarten the Teacher said don't tell a lie. If you are to lie and to tell one your Mother should surely wash out your mouth with soap !
Most people in the City of St.Louis political circles believe that 24 th Ward Alderman Bill Waterhouse is the "only" elected official in the city who DID NOT graduate from high school.Isn't it also true that he never passed the high school equivelency test (G.E.D.) ?
Posted by William Fitzmaurice on Thu., Feb 15, 2007 at 6:16 PMI spoke with James Klaar in the AG's office about the case pending against Mr. Bauer. And yes, it is still pending. The AG's office telephone is 573-751-3321.
I would be interested to know, Mr. Dunn, who in the AG's office would call Mr. Bauer "clean."
