The Board celebrated Black History month in its last session before the spring break. Part of the celebration included the recognition of James R. Clark, Eugene "Teddy" Willingham, Khaleed Munir, James Moton, Bessie Will Taylor Morehouse, and Elder Ernest A. Byrd. The resolutions are here.
Alderman Lewis Reed was recognized by his colleagues this morning. The alderman, whose 6th ward seat was up for reelection this year, gave up his position to run for President of the Board of Aldermen against the incumbent, James Shrewsbury.
During an action by the board recognizing the work of former State Senator Pat Dougherty, Alderman Steven Gregali, 14th ward, lamented the imposition of term limits that drove the St. Louis Democrat from office. He was followed in his 4th District seat by Jeff Smith.Dougherty praised the board's work saying they deserve a "greater debt of gratitude."
Alderman Matt Villa's WiFi bill swept through the board of aldermen this past week. Introduced last Friday, it was given its second reading Wednesday and passed this morning. Alderman Lewis Reed asked to be added to the bill.
It should be noted that when passing the legislation authorizing Ball Park Village, two alderman kept a low profile; Aldermen Quincy Troupe, 1st ward, and Lewis Reed, 6th ward. The two aldermen were present at the meeting, but cast no vote. The two aldermen voted in favor of the bills on Wednesday.
I'm told two others voted against. Who?

looks like Reed can now add magician to his list of "accomplishments."
not sure how he could have voted for BP Village when he was hiding out in the back offices during the vote.
He pulled the same stunt Friday when they were voting on Bosley's resolution to require police and firefighters to live in the city.
Posted by gfd on Sat., Feb 10, 2007 at 6:27 AMI only count 26 votes out of 29; one missing is no alderman in 19th; who are other two?

There are 28 wars, not 29, which is something a candidate for Alderman *should* know.
gfd and Matthew:
I saw Alderman Reed working with several other Aldermen during the meeting to get votes lined up for the bills mention in your article and I saw him talking to a candidate for Alderman during the Ball Park Village vote. I'd say he was doing anything *but* keeping a low profile.
I presumed the President of the Board votes, too; I'll know for sure by the time I run for President of the Board (that wont be this year); or assume office as Alderperson in April. But even if the President doesnt vote (only in case of a tie, maybe?), that still leaves one vote unaccounted for. I presume you dont have a clue about that either, or you would have said so. And I dont blame you for not using your name. Did you retire by choice?
Actually, now that I look at the vote, it shows Shrewsbury voting! so President does vote! 29 not 28! I was right! Again! Shocker! Na Na Na!
In view of these mistakes of yours, tho I have nothing for or against Reed, I'll put more credence in gfd's post than yours, retired dog. Just business, nothing personal. Hope I dont sound prideful when I say that you should know better than to take on the Bill without making sure you've done your homework.
Actually both of your statements are correct. Bill's statement addresses the number of votes (29), and retired city employee addresses the number of Aldermen/wards (28).
I wasn't at the meeting where these votes occured, but I've never known either Quincy Troupe or Lewis Reed to duck out on hard issues. They both take hard issues head on and tell people where they stand, squarely. So I am inclined to believe the city employee in this matter based on my previous experience with both of these distinguished legislators.
Plus based on what I've heard from and seen of Bill Haas, I just can't trust his judgement.
