Protesters "sitting in" Carnahan's Office

The protest to demand a public statement from Russ Carnahan opposing the surge is continuing at this hour in the Congressman's Manchester office.

There are about a dozen protesters outside the office and five women, including ACC contributor Angie O'Gorman, are inside and refusing to leave. The lone staffer, Carnahan communications man Glenn Campbell, hasn't yet called the police to forcibly remove them, apparently content to wait them out.

Who will win this duel of patience?

UPDATE: 10pm - Police are on the scene.

As long as people keep needlessly dying in Iraq, I'm sure the protestors' patience will not wear out. Thanks ACC for covering this courageous group of people and let's all hope they are successful in getting Congress to do the right thing!

So why sit in at Russ's office? Don't war cheerleaders Bond and Akin have offices?

Glenn Campbell? Are you serious?

Norm Pressman is right. Why Carnahan when Bond is the real target?

-duel of patience.

I am sure that is how it is at Carnahans office.

Protestor: "Stop the War NOW!"

Staffer: "Yah, we are working on that."

5 minutes pass.

Protestor: "So, have you stopped the War!"

Staffer: "I agree we need to stop the war, but it will take a while to undue the mess."

5 minutes pass.

Protestor: "WE want the War stopped Now!"

Staffer: "Still going on, do you want some coffee?"

Great. Let's all go down and create problems for a Democrat Rep. Ignore Bond - he needs more time to be a cheerleader for Bush. Bond was on the tube last night trying to explain why the Repubs were blocking the vote on Irag. Amusing. So ignore that and pick on Carnahan.

Great thinking guys.

Now, hold on. I agree that Bond is terrible and should be kicked out of office as soon as is humanly possible, but the reality is that Democrats in Congress need to get their act together. Democrats know this war is wrong, they have publicly said so, they were elected in large part because they said so, and now they need to act on what they said. Congress has the power of the purse and can stop this escalation if they use it, but instead many seem to prefer spending all of their time arguing about "symbolic resolutions." For example, McCaskill supports the Warner-Levin Resolution that "symbolically criticizes" the war and yet *promises* not to cut funding to prevent an escalation. In other words, it is completely empty rhetoric that would have no effect on Bush whatsoever. If Dems know the war is wrong, how can they waste time on rhetoric while families are being destroyed every day the war continues?

I have always been and probably always will be a Democrat, but we need to remember just how pathetic the Democratic Party was before the Iraq war. Ultimately, Kerry was hurt big time in the election from not having the guts to stand up to the war early on because he was worried about being called "weak on defense." Now the Democrats seem like they're ready to make the same mistake right out of the gate; they're so scared of being called "weak" that they won't take concrete steps to end the war. But this would only backfire because the media would (and not without justification) be all-too-happy to point out that the Dems were gutless for not standing up against a war they know is both morally wrong and damaging our nation's interests.

I'm confident that Carnahan will ultimately make the right choice, but rank-and-file Democrats need to make sure we keep our officials accountable.

This protest at Carnahan's office is part of a nation-wide movement of protests, sit-ins, and related acts of civil disobedience that target funders of the Iraq war.

Here is the page from the national "Occupation Project" site about the action at Carnahan's office:

Another rally is convening right now (noon) at Carnahan's office.

- If Dems know the war is wrong, how can they waste time on rhetoric while families are being destroyed every day the war continues? -

Because the legislative branch is esentialy usless in ordering troops out of Iraq!

Now if the peace protestors would target republican senators to Impeach the President then they could get him to bring the troops home, but the Democrats are not 2/3s of the senate.

Get 2/3rds of the senate to Ipeach bush and the troops will come home!
