House Dems look to 2008

Jake Zimmerman is the front runner to head the DHCC next cycle.

There are only three names in the pool right now and it'll likely be some combination or team. The other names mentioned are Margaret Donnelly and Rachel Storch. All three from St. Louis!

But both Donnelly and Storch have been mentioned as potential AG candidates which would be impossible to juggle with this responsibility.

There’s only one knock against Zimmerman: he’s not battle-tested. He ran unopposed and some folks think the experience of a tough campaign is helpful for the job. He will definitely be part of the team though with Donnelly or Storch, and may even head it up.

Clint Zweifel, meanwhile, gets good reviews for his effort last cycle – as does Storch who helped him. But he’s going to focus on some legislative action. He’s taking a lead in fights to stymie the GOP efforts of MOHELA and the Social Security tax cut.

how are you going to stand up and oppose a tax cut on social security benefits. Use the "it's only for rich people" defense all you want and while a very valid point it will not stick with the average Missourians. Because they just see grandpa and grandma getting their checks and think a tax cut woudl be nice.

MOHELA go for it....but opposing a tax cut is never a good idea, especially one aimed at old people and then the military pension tax cut....not the way to go for 08 guys

You can offer an alternate bill that only offers a tax cut to individuals under a specific income threshold. It is beyond me how Zweifel gets a good review for only picking up five seats in such an awful year for the GOP. I personally like Storch and Donnelly as legislators but neither one is has any chance of winning a statewide race. Someone like Cathy Jolly would make a stronger female AG candidate, having had experience as a prosecutor.

Wow, that was a big underestimation of Rachel Storch. She's fantastic.

Also, Jake Zimmerman is really savvy, and very smart. The fact that he didn't draw a Republican opponent is a testament to that.

Jay Nixon had never worked as a prosecutor before his election as AG. I suspect that SCP is confusing the offices of AG and Circuit Attorney.

I am all for JAKE ZIMMERMAN besides we are all battled tested by Republicans aren't we Missouri? Congradulations Jake on your efforts..

So..let me get this straight. Not having an opponent in an election makes one both
"really savvy" and "very smart"? So does that mean that one is less savvy and smart if another has filed to run against them?

I'm glad you have cleared this up for me, Betty. I was previously under the impression that an opponent was completely irrelevant to one's intellect.

SouthCountyProgressive: while that sounds like a logical plan the bottom line is that most people under a certain amount already pay no taxes. And take off your progressive/liberal/democrat/republican/conservative political cap and use logic....the income drivers of the economy are the middle to upper class. Poor people, whom we all want to help. do not help the economy. It is the middle class and the upper class. And face it many in this day and age considered middle class would be in the gun sights of many people running for office. Because "they are rich" But a family of 4 on two incomes making $100,000 is not really rich in St. Louis, KC, and many other places.

Jake Zimmerman is a bad choice to run a statewide caucus campaign. You need someone who knows what they are doing and a freshman is not going to get it done. It needs to be someone with a face and ability. Someone like a Jeff Harris type.

As for statewide offices I agree that Storch and Donnally have ZERO chance at AG. From all accounts it looks like it will be Koster's race if he wants it. Let's all just work to make sure that whackjob Bartle gets no where near a statewide office though!

SouthCountyProgressive/Steve Jackson: I think that it's way too early to dismiss Donnelly for AG. She has been a lawyer for 20 years, has a long political resume and is a dynamic legislator.
On a side note, it's important to remeber that Donnelly was vice-chair with Zweifel on the HDCC, so she should also get some of the credit for the seat pickups in November.
