I like both Jim and Lewis and have so far stayed out of this race, preferring not to make enemies, letting my constituents choose for themselves, and concentrating on my own race.
But could knowledgable people tell me why the majority of Alderpeople prefer Reed to Shrewsbury? What has Jim done wrong or people expect Lewis to do more right?

Posted by BillHaas on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 9:41 AM

Bill, it's simple.
Obviously the Black Caucus is going to likely support one of thier own, that is just a simple fact. Nothing wrong with that, but it's going to happen.
Second, Stephen Gregali and his harem of union-supported clowns (Krewson, Florida, Hanrahan) are backing him so that Gregali can pull Reed's strings. If you know Lewis, he is not exactly a brightly shining star, but instead more of a dimly lit candle.
For the white alderman, this is all about union control. Right now they have a strong influence in City Hall, but they want to run it. No white person could garner enought support to run against Shrewsbury and win, so they are using a black alderman and the black caucus to drive the race issue, then garner enough white union crossover to turn it for Reed.

I have heard that Shrewsbury has more union support than Reed STL City GOP.

Posted by Worried Citizenq on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 10:15 AM

From what I've seen, Shrewsbury is the only one playing the race card. His in appropriate statements in the 24th ward were just the start for this campaign. His racist remarks got him in trouble a few years ago with people of Lebanese decent, and then when he depicted Comptroller Virvus Jones as a black dog in an ad. The man is a biggot.

Posted by strongly questioning on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 10:35 AM

Um, I don't think you can legitimately include yourself (i.e. "Ward 6 Lewis E. Reed") in a count of wards who have endorsed you. Take that one out, and you're at an even 14, not a majority.

Posted by amanda on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 10:51 AM

There is no doubt the unions are giving to both candidates, they have the money to cover all thier bets. In the recent quarter, Reed has raised alot more from the unions than Shrewsbury. But Stephen Gregali is the AFL-CIO's lead man on the BOA. Do you think he would support Reed if that is not who the unions really wanted to win?

Posted by STL City GOP on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 11:07 AM

Amanda, if you take Lewis out, he still has 14 of 27 (not 28), which is still a majority.

Posted by Antonio French on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 11:58 AM

oops....did I mention I only had to take one math class in college? My bad on forgetting to take that ward out of the total count, too.

Still, I think it's a bit obsequious to include yourself as an endorsement in your own press releases.

Posted by amanda on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 12:20 PM

I am demoralized by the MANY comments regarding race as the basis for Reed support! How about the plain facts that Shrewsbury 1) is a biggot, and not all voters in the City are of like-mind, and 2) that Shrewsbury displays minimal ability to lead a City that is in extreme need of new direction, given we have the national label of 'the most dangerous city in the country'. And, what is this about Shrewsbury running a law practice outside of the city and in south county?
So to those of you making the 'racially motivated' remarks, I say there is great reason for the showing of support for Reed.

Posted by Mark on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 12:41 PM

It would seem as though "Mark" and "strongly questioning" are the same person since they both spelled "bigot" incorrectly.

So, "Mark" since you posted the other comments about President Shrewsbury being a "biggot" you really shouldn't be demoralized.

Posted by Spelling Bee Champ on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 1:12 PM

New direction, new leadership, a big change...

Easy enough.

Now where are the details?

Posted by Michael on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 4:03 PM

I am appalled at my spelling error. I wish the ACC had a spell check feature, but that is no excuse. I should have proofed my post before submitting it.

I, however, am not named Mark, nor did I use the nom de plume "Mark". I didn't know that Shrewsbury had his law office in the county. But, I am appalled at that too!

Posted by strongly questioning on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 4:43 PM

Altho I'm sure they're very smart in their own Republican way, I prefer not to get any of my opinion information from STL City GOP, (or factual either, for that matter, without checking). Nothing personal, just business and a point of personal and political and intellectual and moral privilege and principle.

Posted by BillHaas on Fri., Feb 2, 2007 at 7:06 PM

It has been suggested that some of the Alderman are supporting Reed because they are Slay backers and Reed is pretty much of a Slay supporter, and Schrewsbury is often an independent voice from the mayor. This would be to Schrewsbury's credit if true. It's good to have independent voices at city hall not all automatic supporters of Slay.

Posted by jennifer on Sat., Feb 3, 2007 at 9:44 AM

While the 18th Ward precinct committeepeople are supporting Reed, my understanding from the St. Louis American is that my opponent Terry Kennedy has not endorsed anyone. We wouldnt want you to actually take a position on an important issue, Terry, would we?. In the interest of full disclosure, I havent taken a public position on the race, either. But the situation of me not being elected yet might be different, as my job should be to avoid enemies, or keep everyone as friends at this point. And I like them both. And I went to both of their fundraisers. Didnt see Terry at either. He must have been out of town, or out of order, or something. But I'm not judging. That would be wrong.
And I promise to take a firm position on the President of the Board of Alderpeople race 4 years from now (when I'm the incumbent). Maybe.

Posted by BillHaas on Sat., Feb 3, 2007 at 2:27 PM

I think criticism of Shrewsbury because he has his law practice in the county is the dumbest criticism I've ever heard about a politician (not including all the criticisms I've heard about me).
I dont know and dont care why he has his law practice there. Presume that's where his firm or clients are. Wish I had law practice anywhere. Maybe I can be his paralegal.
I would hope we could use blogs for imformation and ideas, maybe opinions, but not cheap ad hominem attacks. Good luck with that. Thank goodness the blogs (at least the ad hominem cheap shots and perhaps other posts as well) dont affect or change two votes in a millenium. Now that might not be true forever, but believe it's true now. Tho the information from the bloggers, as opposed to the comment posters, is often interesting and informative. (Hear that y'all? Antonio, Jake, Dave, Jo "it's rambling" Mannies, others? You're the greatest.) Not as good generally as Jerry Berger, but still good. Of course, they're generally more accurate than Jerry Berger. A coin flip was more accurate than Jerry Berger. Anyone who doesnt know who that is is automatically disqualified.
Now for a glass of wine (ok, that's over), dinner, tomorrow's Post and tv. Not a life, but the best fascimile of it I can muster. Maybe my win will change that, or at least keep me so busy I wont notice so much.

Posted by BillHaas on Sat., Feb 3, 2007 at 7:16 PM

Bill cheer up! That last post was a little depressing. As for Shrewsbury's law practice, I believe the complaint is relavant because an alderman, or President of the Board of Aldermen, should be trying to bring business into the city. If his practice isn't in the city, how can he ask other businesses to do that?

(MSNBC is a Microsoft-NBC joint venture.)

Every article that MSNBC publishes that references Microsoft includes this disclaimer.

Why do I post this on Arch City Chronicles in a thread related to Lewis Reed?

Because according to information I recently learned, every article the Arch City Chronicle that presents information related to Lewis Reed should include an analogous disclaimer of the nature “The Arch City Chronicle is a joint venture of David Drebes and a variety of intimate supporters of Lewis Reed”.

The information recently relayed to me includes the facts that:

1.) The Arch City Chronicle has accepted financial support from the Pyramid Companies in the form of free or reduced rent on their office at Arsenal and Compton, owned by Pyramid. John Steffen and the Pyramid Co’s. are long-time, well known supporters of Lewis Reed, and Reed’s campaign office is located in the Jefferson Arms Building owned by Pyramid.

2.) The Arch City Chronicle has accepted direct cash financial support from Richard Callow, Lewis Reed’s campaign manager.

If this information is inaccurate, please dispute it immediately. If this information is true, please acknowledge that you are not operating an independent media outlet, but one biased towards the interests of your investors.

Really hate responding like this, but I must since almost every single "fact" is untrue. - Dave

1. We don't receive free or reduced rent. Come by the office, I'll show you the lease.

2. Steffen has donated thousands of dollars to Shrewsbury, none to Reed, so it's not exactly clear that he's on Reed's side.

3. Callow is not Reed's campaign manager. Bob Rice is.

4. The only money we've received from Callow is from ads he's bought in the ACC. No different than the money we've received from Shrewsbury.

Posted by WorstAldermanEver on Sun., Feb 4, 2007 at 3:25 PM

As Artie Johnson would say, "Interesting. Very interesting." Richard Callow seems nice enough, but if he's really Reed's campaign manager, as Richard is pretty much Slay's guy, that makes Lewis the Slay candidate, as a posters sort of intimated above, doesnt it? Do we really need Slay and another Slay on the BEA? The case can be made of the independence of Schrewsbury being good for the city on the BOE, regardless of what real or imagined mistakes or shortcomings Jim has. I have no dog in this fight; just a thought.

Posted by jennifer on Mon., Feb 5, 2007 at 12:33 AM

Richard Callow is NOT Reed's campaign manager so the whole thing is not true.

Posted by truth check on Mon., Feb 5, 2007 at 10:09 AM

If Callow was Reed's campaign manager, Reed could probably come up with a better campaign message than Hate Jim Shrewsbury.

Posted by Better on Mon., Feb 5, 2007 at 10:48 AM

What does it matter which aldermen endorse Lewis Reed? The committeepeople make official endorsements. Also, sometimes there are "independent" ward groups like in the 15th.

Anyway, this is a very silly issue regarding Jim's law office. His is a probate practice, and so many of his clients are older folks, who just got tired of driving downtown and complained about paying for parking. Lawyers are exempt from getting a city business license (per State law), and he obviously lives in the city so he's still paying city taxes.

I believe Jim offers an experienced, independent voice on E&A and in various other settings. Even if you don't agree with him 100% of the time, you must admit he offers a strongly independent, insightful view on government affairs.

This law office location thing is a non-issue in my view.

Much more crucial is realizing that whoever wins this election may very well get to appoint a member of the three-member transitional school board.

And if you want to hold any elected official responsible for the "most dangerous city" tag, try:

1) Governor Blunt - appoints the Police Board
2) Mayor Slay - sits on the Police Board but can't vote

The President of the Board of Aldermen has no representation on the Police Board.

Posted by Joe Frank on Mon., Feb 5, 2007 at 12:29 PM

I don't want to be represented by someone who thinks so little of my city that they MOVED their business OUT of the city. Shrewsbury did just that. He didn't start it out in the county 20 years ago, he MOVED his business out.

Posted by city lover on Mon., Feb 5, 2007 at 4:18 PM

Joe Frank asked why it matters that a majority of the Aldermen are endorsing Reed. Well, it seems to me that if the majority of one's peers think that he or she would excel at a particular job and want that person to lead them, then that speaks volumes about that individual and the respect that those peers have for that person. If I was seeking a promotion at my job, and my peers recommended me to lead them, I'd sure feel honored. So I think it makes complete sense for Reed to be letting people know that a majority of his fellow Aldermen want him to be the next President of the Board.
