Carnahan: Military can't impose democracy

Carnahan.jpgMissouri Congressman Russ Carnahan (D-3rd) told Fox 2 News that there was a "consensus" that it was time to draw down troops in Iraq while increasing the existing training regimen. The Congressman seemed to echo the suggestions offered by the bi-partisan Iraq Study Group, suggestions President Bush and his administration have not unequivocably embraced.

"The question remains, will the President listen to what I think is substantial advice," said Carnahan.

Bush and the administration have said they will wait until parallel evaluations are complete before making and decisions. While he waits, many in the conservative community are attacking the group's recommendations.

Carnahan also agreed with the Study Group's evaluation that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be addressed in concert with other conflicts in the middle east; a connection Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert rejects.

Maybe Russ and other anti-war Democrats should stop funding the existing campaign? Exercising the power of the purse could have changed the status-quo long ago without the need for a special "study group."

Yet Carnahan and Clay continue to fund the War in Iraq. With a sense of irony Clay criticizes our Foreign Policy when he could instead change it. On 09/26/2006 they both voted for the Department Defense Appropriations Act for FY 2007. This includes another 70 billion specially for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Our elected officials complain about our current Foreign Policy yet they do little to change the course. Rather than exercising their power over funding, or at least threatening this power, they keep the ball in the Presidents Court, thereby choosing inaction. Leaders, where have they gone? Stop waiting until 2008!

Because a vote to defund the war effort now becomes a vote against providing our troops with necessities in the attack ads of 2008.
