Spoke with a couple of people about a Shrewsbury poll last week.
Here's the best recollection of those people:
Favorable/Unfavorable on -
Slay
Shrewsbury
Green
Reed
McMillan
Questions about Reed (do you view the following favorably?)
1. Has no listed telephone number.
2. In favor of BJC-Forest Park Deal.
3. Is African American.
4. Would be the 1st African American BOA pres.
5. Close to the mayor.
6. Mayor appointed Reed's wife to be a judge.
7. Is a developer
8. Gives away tax money for development.
9. Has no city-wide experience.
10. Is endorsed by Lacy Clay
11. Favors giving away tax money for Ball Park Village.
Questions about Shrewsbury (do you view the following favorably?)
1. Sponsored/passed legislation to keep drugs and prostitution away from schools.
2. Sponsored/passed legislation for the Citizen Review Board.
More questions about Shrewsbury
1. Do you think he's been at the BOA too long.
2. Do you think he handled the Smith urination issue appropriately?
3. Do you think he's an independent voice willing to go against the mayor?
Also, Would Darlene Green's endorsement be favorable?
Before and after the poll respondents were asked "If the election were held today, who would you vote for?"
Wow, Shrewsbury just lays it all out there!
#3.) favorable on "Is African American"??? Would like to see those poll results...Might as well ask if you think Michel Richards is funny. Loks like Shrewsbury the traditional southside politician is up to traditional St. Louis Race baiting politics.
Posted by Northsider on Tue., Dec 5, 2006 at 11:13 AMMaybe the details of this poll were cooked up and released to provoke comments like the one above.
Or maybe the poll itself didn't come from Shrewsbury but Reed.
It's hard to tell, since both play dirty when needed and neither wants to discuss the real issues (look at their bland websites and see vague posturing). If they stay away from the issues -- and there are many, since it's all about the Board of E&A -- this race will become all about racial polarization. Hopefully one of them can break out of the trap and take the high road.
Posted by Observant on Tue., Dec 5, 2006 at 11:28 AMWho has the better shot to break out as the non-race based candidate?
Who's supporters are perceived to vote more based on race?
Posted by breakout kid on Tue., Dec 5, 2006 at 11:45 AMWhere is the outrage?
" Is African American?
Would be the 1st African American BOA pres?"
If last summer the question had been "Jeff Smith being Jewish. Jeff Smith now being an atheist," the white liberal yuppies would have been up in arms. But race is a not issue for the white liberals. "Let's just get past race." Not with racists like Jim Shrewsbury around. That racist Tom Zych did the same thing to Tink Bradley 25 years ago and people were more upset then than they are now.
If Jeff Smith is really an atheist, God help him when he gets to Jefferson City.
You've got to have faith to have a prayer of a chance in solving the problems we face.
Going it alone is no answer.
Posted by say it ain't so on Tue., Dec 5, 2006 at 3:57 PMTo those unfamiliar with polling, when you are testing the potential support for a candidate, who is largely unknown, like Lewis Reed, descriptive identifiers are used. In Reed's case, one of those identifiers is that he is an African American. This is standard polling technique. In and of itself it does not denote a racist campaign.

Except that every question regarding Reed bears a negative connotation or refers to race
Matt B,
That is not true. I was called on the survey and it tested positive and negative messages about both Shrewsbury and Reed. Again, standard practice in polling.
Seems like a standard test-the-waters poll to me.
