Despite earlier rumors, tonight's Lewis Reed fundraiser at the home of Gate District president, Steve Zeiger, will not include Reed announcing for president of the Board of Aldermen.
Why do you build us up? Just to let us down.
If I was Reed I would be a little nervous to go up against Darth Shrewsvader. Have you seen that stare?
Posted by The Potato on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 1:12 PMPotato-
Epic Darth Shrewsvader take! Yes I have seen the stare and if he had James Earl Jones' voice to go with that stare, what a political force he would be. Tonight's event is simply a fundraiser/house party.
Reed has come to his senses. He will not challenge Shrewsbury.
Now how does he deal with the challenge to his own 6th ward berth?
He seems to have left his flank exposed.
Posted by Political Dilemma on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 2:56 PMI hope that whoever is encouraging Alderman Reed has his best interests at heart. Jim Shrewsbury is the best Democrat in the city in terms of promoting and helping other Dems running for office and has lots of folks who owe him. Lewis is a nice young man, but will never beat Shrewsbury and may prematurely end his promising future.
Posted by margaret campbell on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 3:01 PMI don't think he's come to his senses...but I agree with you about having his flank exposed. He evidently has some dark forces working for him as they are already trying to vilify Jim Shrewbury, perhaps the nicest, fairest politician in the City of St. Louis.
I hope Reed has career plans after his loss.
Posted by Jack Louis on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 3:04 PMI don't have near as many friends as you guys believe. I have upset every elected in South St. Louis to some extent.
Posted by Darth Shrewsvader on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 3:06 PMWatch it Darth Shrewsvader is in the room.
Posted by The Potato on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 3:44 PMIf Darth Shrewsvader had made every South Side Elected happy...we could all skip off into the sunset with bon bons falling from the sky, bonking us on the noggin.
You gotta break an egg to make an omelet.
Posted by TRouble on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 4:13 PMDarth Shrewsvader:
Do you have the support of Francis Slay, Jr.? Is he behind Lewis Reed's bid for the office that you now hold?
Posted by April on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 9:35 PMWhy are you calling Jim Shrewsbury a Sith Lord?
Jim is one of the most accessible and nicest politicians I have encountered.
He also has a solid record on intergovernmental relations, criminal rehabilitation, mass transit, and urban revitalization which does not include demolition.
How is that anything like Darth Vader?
The name was for humorous purposes only. Me referring to him as such is fitting considering Halloween is just around the corner.
Honestly, no pun' intended. I do not have any problems with the leadership he has provided, thus far.
I apologize for any misconception(s).
Lewis Reed is going to be the next President of the Board of Aldermen. He is sharp, hard working, energetic, accomplished and has a great base of support. A house party fundraiser is not the appropriate place to announce a candidacy for the President of the Board. He will wait for the appropriate time.
Shrewsbury does not have an organization behind him at all except his staff working illegally on City time at the taxpayers' expense. He has pissed off a number of elected officials and community leaders. He has also not endeared alot of support that will come back his way because of his focus only on himself.
Posted by Central Corridor Resident on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 10:33 PMShrewsbury is a joke. He will loose. His nickname in his neighborhood is Howdy Doody.
Posted by southsider on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 10:36 PMIf he cared only about himself then why would he pass an ordinance creating a partnership with the federal government to get non-violent criminals out of jail and into rehabilitation programs?
Posted by Douglas Duckworth on Wed., Oct 18, 2006 at 11:20 PMI was referring to helping people in politics. He has a terrible track record of supporting people. Check the MEC reports from the 4th District and see that he gave money to all the candidates. That is not support. That is playing all sides to the middle which is the enthusiasm that people will give him--half ass.
Posted by Central Corridor Resident on Thu., Oct 19, 2006 at 12:31 AMOr maybe smart.
Russ didn't take a position on the race either.
I just went back three reports for Shrewsbury's committee and the only money I can see that it gave was to El-Amin for Senate, around $350, and Jones what I believe was Kenny Jones' committee for $100. Also the only Alderman that I saw that gave him money were Waterhouse for Alderman, or whatever it is called. Maybe Jim gave money from his personal account, but with $190,000 on hand that would seem odd. And I know a lot of Alderman are comp'd at fundraisers, but with an opponent who is an alderman I would think he would have wanted to show off his strength and asked for money from all of the Alderman and committee people he could. It just didn't seem like a lot responded.
Posted by Anakin Skywalker on Thu., Oct 19, 2006 at 9:45 AMLet's get some facts straight. While last night's event was planned long before Alderman Lewis Reed intended on running for the President of the Board of Alderman, he shows every intention of running, and in fact is making huge strides in his fundraising efforts.
What is amazing is that the current Board President has so irritated his colleges that many of them are supporting Lewis Reed to assume the job come April. But other Aldermen are not the only supporters of Lewis Reed for Board President, Lewis also has many city-wide elected officials in his corner. They all realize what the city will see come November--it's time for change.
Is the current office holder corrupt? Probably not. Is the current office holder holding back progress? DEFINITELY!
The current Board President is a nice guy, but nice isn't enough. St. Louis needs more, St. Louis deserves more. We need to move forward, not just look back.
And, sure, the current Board President is accessible, you can easily find him practicing law at his law office any day of the week, just ask Phillis Young, who actually presides over the board meetings.
Let's talk about what Lewis Reed has done for the 6th ward, and our city. Lewis Reed has brought roughly $1.7 billion of investment to his ward, and I look for him to do the same for the entire city when he is elected President of the Board of Aldermen.
Lewis Reed has built lasting neighborhood relationships that foster communication and growth. Sure, you'll see the current Board President at neighborhood meetings, but you won't see the type of positive relationship with community leaders necessary to promote progress and stability in those neighborhoods.
It is for all these reasons that urban-minded, progress-minded St. Louisans should support Lewis Reed for President of the Board of Aldermen.
Shrewsbury is stuck in time, Lewis Reed will move us forward.
Posted by The Lou Wonk on Thu., Oct 19, 2006 at 11:49 AMDoug, Darth Vader is a character in a couple of movies. He is NOT real.
Posted by TRouble on Thu., Oct 19, 2006 at 12:53 PMApril:
President Shrewsbury does not have the endorsement of Mayor Francis Slay. Slay is backing Reed.
This alone is suspect.
After all...Nia knows when a politician fears a person; trouble abounds.
