Isn't there some rule about accepting gifts by public officials?

I am as hard on the Governor as anyone else, but I wouldn't view this as a gift, as it is a normal business practice for airlines to upgrade some passengers (usually frequent fliers). But you just know if it had been the other way around, the Republican mouth-pieces would be jumping all over the Carnahan family.

I know that some people do get bumped due to overbooking of coach, but it seems not quite right that someone who is in a position to hand out preferential treatment, the elected official, should be the one to get the benefit.

I would actually have had some respect for him if he turned it down because it was an APPEARANCE of conflict.

Not a huge deal, I agree.

Relax people. These are not gifts or anything that you have to file with the IRS or the FEC. It is completely normal for frequent fliers to get bumped to first. It has nothing to do with coach being full or anything like that. It's all preset in the computer and the gate agents have VERY little control. Take American Airlines for example: If you're Gold (25k miles/year) you will get bumped to first if you have a full fare ticket and there is room in first class. People who are Executive Platinum (100k miles/year) get bumped first regardless of the type ticket purchased. Platinum (50k/year) are bumped up second on full fare tickets followed by Gold.
The computers couldn't care less who you are most of the time. There are exceptions such as active-duty military, but they are bumped after Gold if there are any seats left empty in first. It's about taking care of frequent business fliers who are the bread and butter of the airline industry.

How much "preferential treatment" could Gov. Blunt really give American Airlines, really? Particularly an AA agent in D.C.?

Airlines are regulated by the FAA -- a Federal agency. OK, maybe, just maybe, there's some nefarious connection between Roy Blunt and the FAA/American Airlines, but let's get real.

As much as I detest what Matt Blunt has done to hard-working Missouri families, this is not a serious issue.
