Sheri Ford, owner of Tension Head on 2619 Cherokee St. won a small (280.00) grant from the Incarnate Word Foundation, and is using the funds to hold "Cherokee Clean-up Day" on Satuday Sept. 23. The event will focus on cleaning up Cherokee Street between Texas and Jefferson.
Besides cleaning up trash, the volunteers will edge the trees with rubber or plastic to keep all the dirt from blowing onto the sidewalk- like shown:

Though rain may hamper the event, goodies provided by Shangri-La will still be available to the volunteers. Here is a picture of Sheri:

I'm glad to see citizens taking steps to improve their community, but....
The way people deal with street trees in this town drives me crazy! First, the trees are often planted too high relative to the sidewalk. Then they pile on layer after layer of mulch to the point it overflows the natural border of the concrete sidewalk. Then we come along and have to find ways to keep all this excess mulch in place, often creating trip hazzards in the process. All the while these efforts promote shallow roots which are more likely to break up sidewalks.
Our freeze-thaw cycle will have the plastic edging poping out in next spring. This is not the right solution.
Posted by Urban Review on Sat., Sep 23, 2006 at 8:48 AMU.R., I understand where you're coming from here... but man--this is Cherokee Street we're talking about. ANY positive community activity on this street is welcome.
Come next spring Sheri is going to try to get some flower beds going. There's not much to be done for the trees other than trying to keep the plastic scraps, broken glass and cig butts out of the mulch and off the sidewalks, which is what we did down there. The plastic edging may seem like only a band-aid, but it was only a small part of the clean-up effort that took place today.
