Globe Shopping

I really love shopping in the city, especially at antique stores and places like the Globe Drug Stores on Cherokee. There are two on Cherokee, the westernmost one is a flea market/Kmart/corner store hybrid full of random items like newly (FDA) appoved birth control pills for women in their forties. These pills were innocuously nestled amongst launch bags, paper cups, and, I believe, knock-off Reynolds-wrap.

Where else can you get some Little Pig BBQ Sauce:

or "Ethnic Sheen" hair pomeade, (which I suppose must work with all ethnicities from the Masaii to the Sherpas)

79 cent candy bars draw my ire, but Globe still has 50 cent, premium candy bars--

Even if the back of my M and M's had its writing in Arabic, and in the end, was put into a bag straight from an unsuspecting Rally's, it tasted just as good as the high-rent version.

Besdies the oddities, there are some really great deals at Globe Drug, like cheap but stylish candle holders, and cat/dog cages at a fraction of the price you might find in other stores.

I shop at these places fairly frequently, and not in some condescending "HAHA this-isn't-Whole-Foods-look-and-laugh-where-poor-people-are-forced-to-shop" kind of way. Stores like these help define some of that city flavor and diversity that I will never get enough of.

Love Globe, too, but always check "sell by" dates. I almost broke some teeth on soy chips from there a couple weeks ago. Seemed like less of a "steal at 30-cents" after that.

The Globe is so cool...but you are right..check the born on date for most of their stuff. Cheap does have its price. Be especially careful about the date of the birth control pills...LOL

But hey, think of how pedestrian friendly the stores are! Steve Patterson must love them! Cheap stuff (even some stuff that you can actually use, service from friendly but underpaid non-union staff without essential benefits. No City subsidies to greedy developers. POWER TO THE PEOPLE. SHOP AT GLOBE.

And dont forget, they gots lots of sidewalks.

I've been shopping at Globe Drug since I was a little kid. They are great stores! Two things I still get there: candy at Easter (their home made chocolate rivals Merb's) and silk flowers for the cemetary. Strange combo I know, but Globe is a unique place. Everyone should check it out.

Lucas,
Great shout out on Globe. Kudos to Mr. Cohen and his talented son Jason as well.

To Urbane Observer: Yes, I do love Globe Drugs! They are located in traditional storefronts without dedicated parking lots. Two stores are located a block apart on Cherokee Street and one is located on South Broadway near Russell. A third is located downtown near police headquarters.

I have not verified the compensation & benefits for Globe's employees but I they are providing jobs, sales taxes and such without taking anyone's private residences or holding out their hands for incentives from tax payers.

A large percentage of their cutomers walk to their stores. I'm glad they are part of the local retail scene.

Lucas, Great post. That first picture is hilarious but they arent actually pills, they are tissue boxes with the logo on it. I am telling you, this store has everything.
