ELECTION DAY UPDATE
** Karla May looks like she has great poll presence in the 57th. Should be interesting to see if that's translated into votes.
** Light turn-out everywhere. Bad news for those without a serious ground game. Gambaro folks say its OK for them, that their conservative base is still more likely to vote than others. Smith folks also think that their election day machine will work regardless of over-all trends.
** SEEN WORKING THE POLLS: At the Sublette YMCA: Carnahan Chief of Staff Todd Patterson; 10th ward Committeeman John Paul Frisella; Congressional candidate Jim Frisella; candidate Derio Gambaro. At the Shaw's Sherman Elementary: Mr. Smith movie producer Matt Coen. At Kingshighway Library: Alderman Steve Conway. At Adam's School: Former aldermanic candidate Rodney Burchfield.

I voted at DuBourg High School in the 16th Ward this morning. Boykins, Smith and Gambaro were obviously represented but a few others were milling around - some were getting signatures for a "protect Forest Park" petition.
Inside about 4 voters waited for the couple of electronic machines. The election judge said the paper ballot would be quicker, so I filled in my blanks and it was sucked away into a Diebold machine. It reported that I was the 45th ballot - this was at about 7:30am. Plus however many voted on the electronic machines I guess.
Posted by diatriber.com on Tue., Aug 8, 2006 at 10:51 AMJust got a robo-call (28th ward) from Senator Coleman encouraging me to go vote for Amber Boykins.
Posted by Checking in on Tue., Aug 8, 2006 at 11:43 AMI worked for Jeff at the South City Y. Derio was only there for about 10 minutes, understandably, but it was tough to call what kind of turnout any candidate had because, unlike other polling places, the Y is a high-traffic area anyway. However, I felt very positive about the number of vocal Jeff voters early this morning. If I do say so myself, the two other Jeff workers and I were much more outgoing and enthusiastic than the lone Gambaro woman pictured above. Of course, I'm hugely biased, but you would think with such close proximity to the Hill, she would have felt a little more confident.
I also voted later in the day, and I found the touch-screen easy to use and I appreciated seeing my vote printout. If only money came out after you voted.

In U city we had similiar experiences, Rep. Maria
Chappelle-Nadal had many volunteer poll workers and her opponent Sandi Colquitt had many paid workers, some were children or teenagers.
Some of Ms. Colquitt's workers said that had voted for her opponent.
The turn out seemed low.
Ms Coquitt's workers were passing out a ballot and a reprint of a letter to the St. Louis American that was an attack on her opponent.
Rep Chappelle-nadal handouts were a ballot and a list of people and groups that endorsed her.
It seems kind of typical of the whole campaign.
The Orthodox Jewish community was showing up to vote for Colquitt because they thought she supported vouchers, which they would like to use at their schools.
