Consensus says that it's a two-way race between activist Jamilah Nasheed and former alderperson Sharon Tyus. ACC endorsed Nasheed. Predictions anyone?

I wish that the two of them weren't running against each other. I wish I could vote for both of them. Sharon Tyus was an aldermanic representative that really helped her ward.

Slay really set race relations back in this town when he went after Sharon.

Slay set race relations back?

Slay went after Tyus?

"Parent" needs to go to school on how things work at the Board of Aldermen.

Interesting how the consensus (myself included) regards the retiring incumbent's husband as having no chance.

Yeah, was it Slay or the other aldermen who did the damage to Tyus?

Methinks it was over 20 of the ne'er-do-wells who went after her and Schmid for being too independent -- for actually acting as legislators rather than extras from a bad movie about Chicago ward bosses.

Sharon Tyus will crush Jamilah Nasheed on election day. People were not aware that Sharon Tyus was running, and now everyone is taking down their Nasheed yard signs. The Nasheed signs remain on the liquor stores and on vacant buildings, but nobody votes at those locations. Nasheed made a fatal mistake of peaking too soon, and now Tyus is gaining momentum like a snowball coming down a steep hill. Tyus can't be stopped and her comparison mailer was brilliant, who knew that Nasheed only had a GED! In most cases, a law degree beats out a GED! Who knew that Tyus had given Nasheed a loan to save her former business? Who knew that as recently as 2004, Jamilah Nasheed was going by the name of Denise Williams? Who is Jamilah Nasheed? What do you think about Jamilah Nasheed? I think that on August 8, I will not be voting for her! I will be voting for Tyus!

A lot of smart kids in city public schools drop out for their safety and then get a GED. Some even follow up and go to college. I'm not sure that oneupsmanship on educational attainment goes over that well in that district.

The adoption of African names by adult African Americans is also not unusual. It's not like she adopted an alias.

ummm...my mom had a GED. Is that a problem? She then went on and didn't get a degree but took a good dose of college courses in things like Fortran and the such. I don't have strong preferences in the race, but I've been impressed with Nasheed's hard work as a single mother and her getting a GED seems like a part of a lot of hard work she has put in.

I certainly don't count Tyus' achievements against her, but there are different kinds of achievements and having diverse voices is always a good thing.

I'm an overeducated white guy and having a law degree doesn't even make me give someone an automatic leg up in whom I'm voting for.

I have a dumb question for Oracle. Pertaining to your first statement. Do kids in the SLPS really drop out for their safety? Is it really as bad as Helen and Kevin make it out to be? My limited dealings with the SLPS have been nothing like that. My kids are very young, though.

Sorry about the Meta-comment.
