Open Thread - GOP Auditor's primary

We're starting a series of open threads looking at different Aug 8 races.
This morning is the Auditor's race. Let's hear predictions. My gut is saying Jack Jackson. He's spending the $500,000 he lent himself and I'm guessing that the Col. bit plays well with GOPers.

I have to say that I agree with Dave, first, the man has Col. in front of his name on the ballot. If that doesn't win it right there in a GOP primary I don't know what does. Not to mention, if he is willing to spend that $500K of his own money plus what he has raised. None of his competition will be able to touch him.

I think Southsiders point about IF Jackson is willing to spend his coin ( now less than 500k if you look at the MEC filings thru 6/30).

The P-D reported that Jacksons TV and continued radio started yesterday and sources told me that Thomas has some media. If the Loudon scuttlebutt is true, they must have pre-bought or brought in some coin after June 30 to cover lots of media. Outstate its supposedly all about signs with some 70% ? Loudon,15% Thomas with Jackson getting the rest. Hmmm

Looking another way some handycappers sent me this info on fundraising ( DEM & GOP thru 6/30):

April-June Fundraising Rankings
1. Loudon - 66,137
2. Jackson - 35,903
3. Thomas - 29,599
4. Wright - 18,181
Total 'Funds Donated To Candidates' Rankings
1. Loudon - 389, 887
2. Jackson - 248,299
3. Montee - 213,805
4. Thomas - 63,164
5. Wright - 52,902

Total Debt Rankings
1. Jackson - 500,000
1. Montee - 500,000
3. Thomas - 150,000
4. Wright - 50,000
5. Loudon - 0

I havent personally confirmed this but for a few Jackson and Loudon filings

What does a Test Pilot millionare know about being an auditor.

Now I know that being elected to the Auditor position does not mean one has to have a CPA. I don't think Jack has a chance.

Besides most candidates that rely on thier own money rather than donations from others loose.

This looks bad for Montee as well as Jackson.

How did this "candidates who rely on their own money usually lose" stuff get started?

That pattern applies if you don't have much of it to spend.

I guess Gov. Corzine of NJ, Sen. Cantwell of WA, Sen. Dayton of MN (to name a few) didn't get the memo.

If you have enough money to spend getting your message out, it doesn't matter where it came from.

Greg- You name 3 (I am sure off the top of your head) candadates that spent a majority of their own money to win.

The fact still remains that there are tens of thousands of elected offices through out the united states.

If you break down all the candadates that have run for thease offices you find that the ones that win usualy do so with a majority of the funding through controbutions.

If you can't convince people to give you money you can't convince people to vote for you.

Plus, the candidates you mentiond used almost none of their own money to get re-elected.

Looks like Sandra Thomas Is out... Plat County is missing 200K and she is thier auditor. Not good news 11 days out of E-Day

Peter,

I'm sure you're right on a nationwide basis that most candidates who can't raise money and have to rely on their own usually don't win. But, if you're talking about A particular race like the auditor's race, you can't use a generalization in a specific case.

I'm just saying that the $500K Jackson put into his campaign will buy what he wants to use to get his message out. TV ad salesmen don't care where the $$ comes from.

I'm also not saying Jackson will win because he spends more money. I have no clue.

Southsider is incorrect about one thing: "Colonel" will NOT appear in front of Jackson's name on the ballot. (His signs and campaign literature can say whatever they want.)

Give Loudon credit for lots of sign locations outstate (at least along highly travelled I-70 from StL to Columbia), including at the prestigious Elvis Is Alive Museum in Wright City.

Loudon also has the benefit of one of the best yet underestimated political minds in MO: Gina.

The only other auditor signs I saw on that route were a couple for Mark Wright of Springfield.

I got a robocall yesterday from Sandra Thomas.
