Is the park rally really being branded as "Hudlin Park?" As someone very much open to the idea of amending a cheap lease older than me, I'm surprised the opponents aren't saying "Forest Park" to rile up more for their rally.

Agreed -- and I'm on the other side. Although if BJC's chairman could arrange for the return of Mullanphy Square to the city, perhaps I'd give the matter a second thought.
Posted by Michael Allen on Wed., Jul 5, 2006 at 8:27 PM^And if this isolated pocket weren't already leased years ago (precedent broken), for next to nothing (a lot more money is at stake) and already used as a parking garage (what are you fighting to preserve?), then maybe I'd give the matter a second thought too.
Outside of the immediate neighborhoods or this debate, no one has ever heard of Hudlin. It should really be called the "Save the Barnes Garage Rally."
Posted by Brian on Thu., Jul 6, 2006 at 8:30 AMMaybe part of the purpose of the rally is to get uninformed people who think the space is nothing but a parking garage to notice the very real green space that is really there and in use and which would be lost to the proposed developement.
Posted by St Louis Oracle on Thu., Jul 6, 2006 at 11:04 AMAs to the name of the place, it's not usual to give a separate name to a distinguishable portion of a park, especially when severed from the rest of the park by a major thoroughfare. For example, a portion of the strip of Forest Park between Oakland and Highway 40 is called Turtle Park to no one's objection.
Posted by St Louis Oracle on Thu., Jul 6, 2006 at 11:25 AM^I'm well aware that there are tennis courts and a playground in Hudlin. But I also think it would be better if these amenities were relocated within nearby neighborhoods, like FPSE and/or the CWE. Getting over 40 or just through the mediplex isn't exactly an attractive walk today for area residents.
Partly why Turtle Park is so popular is because Dogtown residents don't have to cross 40 to use it. Don't other neighborhoods deserve the same set-up? Hudlin's amenities could be relocated to the southeast corner of Forest Park within the FPSE neighborhood, where the available land will actually increase due to reconfiguration of the Kingshighway interchange as part of rebuilding 40 (New I-64).
Posted by Brian on Thu., Jul 6, 2006 at 12:32 PMYou're really workin it, Brian. I don't think many FPSE residents agree with you.
Posted by St Louis Oracle on Thu., Jul 6, 2006 at 9:13 PMWhy not just move the ammenities within Forest Park proper?
Posted by travis reems on Thu., Jul 6, 2006 at 10:26 PMDoes Brian live in FPSE perhaps? The CWE? Maybe he uses Hudlin Park every day, secretly wishing as the sheen os sweat from a good tennis game wets his brow that he could have courts *in* his neighborhood, so that he would not get sweatier walking home in the summer heat.
