Couple of things

24th ward endorsements (by email from Committeeman Chuck Miller): As the 24th Ward Democratic Committeeman and member of the 24th Ward Regular Democratic Organization, I wanted you to know that tonight the organization endorsed Derio Gambaro for State Senate (4th District), Russ Carnahan for Congress (2nd District), and Gregg Daly for St. Louis Collector of Revenue. The endorsements were made after members submitted secret ballots for each of the contests. By acclamation, the organization also endorsed Mike McMillan for St. Louis License Collector and also endorsed a position in
opposition to the sale of Forest Park land to BJC.

Its not really surprising that a ward that includes The Hill would support Hill businessman Gambaro. His name has a lot of traction in this area.

It's not surprising that the 24th Ward would endorse Gambaro because I have never known this ward to endorse a woman over a man in any contested race.

Familiarity breeds endorsements.

Mr. Reems I noticed you posted this comment on another website and they corrected you so I will do the honors on this website. The 24th Ward does NOT include The Hill, though before redistricting it did. I do find it interesting that this group would so overwhelmingly pick Mr. Gambaro though.

worried citizen:

Thanks for the 4-1-1! I was a lot more familiar with ward boundaries before redistricting.

Why are you worried that this ward overwhelming voted to endorse Gambaro?

Worried:

I have not seen that "correction" yet. So thank you for bringing it to my attention, however that information is not correct. This ward most certainly does contain a portion of the Hill, as the City's website shows at http://stlcin.missouri.org/alderman/alderman.cfm?Ward=24.

From the City's website on ward territories:

Neighborhoods located entirely or partially in Ward 24 are:

9 Lindenwood Park
10 Ellendale
11 Clifton Heights
12 The Hill
13 Southwest Garden
14 North Hampton
41 Cheltenham
42 Clayton / Tamm
43 Franz Park
44 Hi-Pointe

Nia, I didn't say that I was "worried that this ward overwhelming voted to endorse Gambaro", I said it was interesting. Also the hills own website says that it is bordered by Hampton to the West, Kingshighway on the east and 44 to the north, which would put it outside of the 24th ward.

The so-called "Hill" turf in 24, east of Hampton between 44 and Manchester, over to Sublette, then some over to Macklind, is public lands and some industrial. I am not sure how many voters there are in Des Peres Drainage Ditch and whether they vote in 24 or 10.

The city's nabe designations are often different from nabe association boundaries. Southwest Garden Nabe has been trying to do some branding with signs in the Southwest Garden turf that people most often think is On the Hill.

The 24th Ward includes a small section of The Hill. You can see a map here: http://www.24thward.org/location.html

Mr. Miller, Pub Def says the vote was 42-10 favoring Gambaro over Smith. That's 52 votes out of how many members eligible to vote on the endorsements?

How many of these members have previously worked primary election polls (not special or general election) for his ward organization?

How many of these members have previously worked primary election polls for Bauer's ward organization?

A more thorough discussion already exists on the pubdef blog. There I posted the fact that the "Hill" territory in Ward 24 is Precinct 1, which 2004 election returns reported as having exactly zero registered voters. So no voters who live on the Hill are in the 24th Ward.

Errors in Committeeeman Miller's press release and his comment above illustrate the deterioration of the quality of the politicos now serving on the Democratic City Committee. His press release says the club endorsed Carnahan for the 2nd District, which is Todd Akin's District in west County, St Charles and Lincoln County and includes no part of the City of St Louis. (Carnahan's district is the 3rd, the old Gephardt district.) Then his comment about the piece of the Hill that is in the district suggests that he had no idea the area had no voters. That's not a big deal for the average reader, but I expect better from the political leader of the ward.

The organization making the Gambaro endorsement is largely remnants of Gambaro's own former ward organization before redistricting "divorced" the feuding factions of Gambaro's Hill and then-Alderman Tom Bauer's Dogtown-based organization. The actual voters in the current 24th Ward (Dogtown, Clifton Heights and Ellendale) are much more progressive than the organization. Jeff Smith will carry the 24th, just like Gambaro will overcome Smith endorsements to carry the 16th and 23rd. The endorsements in those wards (as well as Conway's 8th ward organization's endorsement of Gambaro) will merely (but significantly) reduce the winner's margin of victory. The more support Gambaro gets, the more likely the election will be won by Yaphett El-Amin.
