It is hard to see this not becoming an issue in the '06 elections.
Iranian President Confirms Uranium Enrichment.
Even more so since the statement comes on the heels of a series of stories like Seymore Hersh's "The Iran Plans".
In 2002, Iraq was a defining issue for many and Republican success was seen a a go-ahead for the President's foreign policy agenda, particularly Iraq.
Whether current stories represent administration rhetoric, attempts by the military to define the coming debate or mere speculation is difficult to know.
Ahmadinejad's announcement is provocative, but whether Iran is actually capable of enriching uranium to the necessary levels on the scale needed is still in dispute. (For more extensive information on Iran, nuclear proliferation and affiliated topics check out Dr. Jeffrey Lewis over at Arms Control Wonk. More national security info than you can shake a stick at.)
Disturbing but unsurprising news from Iran. Whatever the motivation behind the statements behind the administration and miliatary statements, will we see widespread media capitulation as in the build up to the Iraq attack. A significant segment of the American supported going to war in 2003, and have since changed their minds. The media needs to do a far better job of analyzing the issues in the Iranian issue, so that the public is better informed. We all remember how convincing Colin Powell's testimonry to the UN appeared. Citizens must be prepared to question and challenge what they are told by the government.
The White House's lack of a denial on the possibility of some form of attack on Iraq is familiar. Think back to 2002 and the build up to the war in Iraq; the same evasiveness from Bush was evident. We have had the political skirmish with N. Korea, so upping the ante with Iran shifts focus to the third player in the "axis of evil". With military resources stretched in Iraq, we need to examine the realistic options the military is considering. Perhaps nuclear weapons to stop Iran joining the nuclear club? The hypocrisy of the western nuclear powers is astounding.
Not as disturbing as the City's oppressed scooter owners featured over at Urban Review. I had thought our local Srebrenica survivors had gone through a lot. Thanks to Patterson & Company, now I know what real oppression is. Sorry to have gone off topic. But I think it is important that all of us become familiar with this scooter controversy and stop the madness.
O.K. My real point is that few will care about war, this one or the next one, until the Draft is brought back.
