Filing Update

From SOS:

In 59th, Mark Rice has filed against Oxford.

In the 92nd, Portwood got a primary opponent, Rob Pennell, and a Democrat, William Pinkston.

And in the 96th, Pat Yeager got an opponent, Ronald Levy running as a Republican.

59: Less than 200 votes separated Rice from JMO last time. If the kingmakers don't make a deal, this district will be a part of the city (in addition to the 4th senate district) where the Democratic primary will be worth the effort to vote.

96: In the past, Levy has run on the Libertarian, Reform, US Taxpayers (now Constitution) Parties, and also as an independent. But if Republicans have a serious candidate waiting until the last day to file, waiting was a mistake, because Levy has some name recognition, a niche loyalty among certain conservatives, and the top spot on the ballot. Yeager is heavily favored over any opposition, but if Levy's the Republican nominee, she will coast.

According to the website, Sam Page has not filed for reelection. What's going on there?

Sam filed at 3:30:34

There's another Dem in the 2nd congressional race as well - Charles Karam.

It would have been funny if someone named "Suave" had filed against Daly.

In late breaking news, Mark Rice and Dustin Mitchell are still partners. It is good to know that they have not broken off their relationship. Many of us have come to appreciate their special bond and look forward, in particular, to Dustin's role in the campaign. Dustin has such a penchant for details. It is hard to imagine why he has not yet cleaned up Rice's campaign finance paper trail.

Jeanette is an incumbent now and worked very hard in her first two years as House Rep. Mark and Dustine are NOT a serious challenge for those who know their "collective" crazy background. But it is easy to see how this splits the vote in yet another wasted primary. Vote for the one who is not mired down in excessive controversy and the one who can work hard down in Jeff City- Vote for Jeanette!

Derio. Now Mark. Who else has the Archdiocese recruited to run in the City on the anti-stem cell research, anti-Roe, anti-birth control, anti-gay rights, anti-separation of church and state pro-vouchers ticket?

Posted by Howard on Tue., Mar 28, 2006 at 8:32 AM

Charles Karam is he on the board at MSD?

Posted by Worried Citizen on Tue., Mar 28, 2006 at 9:22 AM

Someone filed against Jim Avery in the 95th, anyone know the story there?

Posted by Joey on Tue., Mar 28, 2006 at 9:52 AM

Wow, take a deep breath Howard and step away from the ledge. You are simply wrong on all counts when it comes to Gambaro. He’s not against all kinds of stem cell research and Derio is the only one talking about making stem cell research a reality; he respects that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land; he is not opposed to birth control (if you are unclear on where Derio stands on women’s health issues, take a look at the Women’s Health Care Initiative that he signed onto and passed when he was in Jeff City); he supported same-sex unions and partner benefits when he was in Jeff City; he firmly believes in the separation of church and state; and he does not support taking money out of the public school system to send children to private school (vouchers and scholarships/tax credits are two different animals—do your research). Your constant rush to rhetoric undermines any credibility you might establish for yourself. If you’re going to take shots at those who you do not support, at least know what you’re talking about.

Ed, thanks for the information. I had no idea that Derio wasn't banking on getting the Sunday before election endorsement lit drop on cars outside mass. I had no idea what a progressive guy he had become.

Could you tell us when/why Derio changed his mind on the matter of state money for religious schools?

===He’s not against all kinds of stem cell research and Derio is the only one talking about making stem cell research a reality

Let's be clear--he's against embryonic stem cell research, correct?

===he respects that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land

If it is overturned, would he vote to ban abortion? And if so, what exceptions would he allow?.
.

===he is not opposed to birth control (if you are unclear on where Derio stands on women’s health issues, take a look at the Women’s Health Care Initiative that he signed onto and passed when he was in Jeff City);

So he would vote to reinstate funding for contraception provided to poor women?

===he firmly believes in the separation of church and state; and he does not support taking money out of the public school system to send children to private school (vouchers and scholarships/tax credits are two different animals—do your research)

Derio is a leading proponent of changing the Missouri Constitution to allow state funds to go to religious schools. So why does he want to change the Constitution if he

A) respects the separation of church and state
B) doesn't want to give private schools public money

Did he oppose the gay marriage amendment? Does he oppose the ban on gay adoption being introduced for the fall election? Does this mean he won't vote to keep homosexual sex criminal as he has in the past?

Posted by ArchPundit on Tue., Mar 28, 2006 at 11:13 AM

BTW, Derio's ACTWin rating was F being very anti-gay. The only bill he voted with them on was an expansion of hate crimes definitions.

Posted by ArchPundit on Tue., Mar 28, 2006 at 11:18 AM

Yes, WD, Karam is a trustee of the MSD.

Posted by Clark on Tue., Mar 28, 2006 at 12:43 PM

William Pinkston may have filed in the 92nd as a Democrat but he is a Republican. Think the gop is nervous about Charles "the driver" Portwood?

And watch filings this afternoon for some interesting stuff regarding the 95th...

Stem cell research: Derio answered this question at a recent meeting I attended. Basically his answer was that the issue looks like it is going to land where it should land . . . with a vote of the people of Missouri and that he’ll support whatever Missourians decide. Roe v. Wade: I have never heard Derio’s position on this issue except to hear him say many times that he respects the law of the land. He also has said that he has no problem with reinstating funding for contraception for the poor. I lived in Derio’s district when he was State Rep and I live in the 4th Senatorial District now, I have heard Derio talk about gay rights many times. He has never said anything that would lead me to believe that he does not support gay rights.

Having said all that, here is what I suggest, come to my neighborhood association (Clifton Heights) meeting next month. Ask Derio these questions yourself. I don’t agree with Gambaro on every issue, but he is honest, accessible, experienced, and committed to being my Senator for the next 8 years.

Hmmm...so what about his position in case it doesn't get decided that way? What's the problem with answering a very simple question?

==Stem cell research: Derio answered this question at a recent meeting I attended. Basically his answer was that the issue looks like it is going to land where it should land . . . with a vote of the people of Missouri and that he’ll support whatever Missourians decide.

Dandy, but his votes were to continue to criminalize sexual relations between consenting adults. Has it changed? This isn't even about civil rights, it's about criminalizing sex. If the Lege criminalizes sodomy my wife and I can be arrested. Does he want to criminalize just same sex sodomy or does he think I ought to give up oral sex? His votes, not what he says, suggest he thinks his role as a Lege member is to decide what my wife and I do in our bedroom.

----Having said all that, here is what I suggest, come to my neighborhood association (Clifton Heights) meeting next month. Ask Derio these questions yourself.

I was at a meeting with him tonight. How about addressing those votes instead of claiming he is socially liberal. It seems to me Derio is a good social conservative and as such should be proud of those positions he took. It's a bit hard to take what he says as more telling than how he voted.

Let's look at the bills he voted for:

1} SODOMY LAW EXPANSION
Date: 4-7-99 Bill Number: HB 850 & HB 851 Votes: For=139 Against=6
Vote to expand the state sodomy law to include sexual acts involving contact between a person’s genitals and another person’s hand.

Hmmmm...my wife and I, well never mind, you know.

2} FORCED HIV TESTING OF HOMOSEXUALS
Date: 4-8-99 Bill Number: HB 460 Votes: For=140 Against=10
Vote to allow law enforcement officers to require and direct HIV testing of any individual having physical contact with the officer and that the officer suspects may be HIV-positive. This will allow anti-gay police to use HIV testing as a form of harassment against law abiding homosexuals.

Wow. Pink triangles next?

3} MISDEMEANOR SEXUAL OFFENSES (THIRD READING)
Date: 5-12-99 Bill Number: SB 335 Votes: For=96 Against=58
Vote to require the Department of Public Safety to submit the names of those committing misdemeanor sexual offenses to the state`s existing sex registry. This would require an offense as minor as two onsenting adult homosexuals who get caught masturbating each other in the privacy of their own home to be registered as sex offenders.

A great use of taxpayer dollars. I like the registry because I can determine where dangerous individuals are, not whether or not my neighbors happen to be in love.

4} MISDEMEANOR SEXUAL OFFENSES (FINAL VOTE)
Date: 5-14-99 Bill Number: SB 335 Votes: For=124 Against=22
Vote to require the Department of Public Safety to submit the name of those committing misdemeanor sexual offenses to the state`s existing sex registry. This would require an offense as minor as two consenting adult homosexuals who get caught masturbating each other in the privacy of their own home to be registered as sex offenders.

So happy about it, he voted for it twice.

The underground campaign to try and scream gay to unions when Jeff's girlfriend is quite attractive and young compared to other significant others is lame, trying to claim some sort of support for gay and lesbian or hell, heterosexual sexual privacy is just laughable.

Derio has long been known as pro-life--he's identified that way in many news stories so I'm confused by the notion that his position is not clear unless he's changed it. That's great, I have no problem with disagreements on the issue, but I'm not sure why anyone is trying to obscure their position.

Posted by ArchPundit on Wed., Mar 29, 2006 at 2:05 AM

Ed,
If you are thinking of voting for Mr. Gambaro based on him probably being okay with stem cell research if the rest of Missouri is, and him probably, from what you can tell, not being anti gay civil rights, and it sounds like he may respect a womans right to make decisions about her own body, well then have I got a candidate for you!
Jeff Smith without question, without any sign of wishy washiness, without any hesitation will tell you exactly where he stands on these issues. He will eliminate all the guess work.
Instead of trying to pull Gambaro's sketchy record on these issues to the left why not just vote for the real deal, Jeff Smith.
I assume you are socially liberal, otherwise why would you want Gambaro to be portrayed as such when he clearly is not?

I checked out some more of Derio's record. It's very interesting:
