Wahby endorses Montee. His statement: St. Louis City Democratic Party Chair Brian Wahby enthusiastically endorsed Susan Montee for the Democratic Nominatation for State Auditor today. Following tonight's Fat Tuesday Parade in Downtown St. Louis, the Chairman said "If you had asked me 6 months ago what were the characteristics of my ideal candidate for State Auditor, I'd say - just as I am today- give me a strong person with elected experience, a candidate with the qualifications - such as a CPA, with the ability to marshal the resources to wage an energetic campaign..... We have that ideal candidate in Susan Montee!" I encourage all Democrats in the City to endorse and support Susan Montee for Auditor & she can win!
Mr. Whaby enthusiasm is interesting. . . . I assume he is speaking on his own personal behalf and not for any group, organization or other entity he might be affiliated with? Interesting as well that his new found enthusiasm is likened to an awakening - I don't seem to recall any type of enthusiasm for his own committee person's political declarations for Auditor - you would think he would have exhibited some of this enthusiastic behavior over his neighbor, committeewoman, Senator, etc. . . .considering he might some day aspire to climb the "political ladder" - people can either boost you up that ladder or pull you down the rungs - wonder how big a boost someone from the northeast part of the state can give him up that ladder when that time comes?

Posted by backtalker on Wed., Mar 1, 2006 at 11:57 PMCarolyn...might the chairman simply be following the lead of his "his neighbor, committeewoman, Senator, etc...."????
Posted by South County Rob on Thu., Mar 2, 2006 at 12:17 AMI know Brian and Maida and have worked with both of them in the past. I am sure that Brian was just following Maida's lead.
As party chair he must be trying to build momentum for a unified Democratic state-wide ticket.
For a change the Dems look like they have their stuff together and are avoiding primaries, unlike the GOP’ers who are going to spend tons in a bloody primary for State Auditor.
Go Dems!
Dean-o-crat & SCB: I guess Mr. Whaby could have been following Sen. Coleman's lead - I just wonder why the leaders of the democrat party didn't work to reach a unified state-wide ticket early on rather than bash one of the leaders of the party - once again, Maida has come forward and exhibited her qualities as a leader - let's hope everyone follows her lead just like Brian - I have found it interesting though when Maida first announced for Auditor, she was bashed right here in this blog, among others and the newspaper as being a "spoiler". . . I have yet to read or hear of any "atta girls" or thank you's from the Montee campaign nor other state wide hopefuls for Maida's grace in pulling out and voicing her support for Montee.
Posted by Carolyn on Thu., Mar 2, 2006 at 6:39 PMDoes anybody care what Mr. Whaaaaby thinks? Maybe he can take the money he stole from the Mardi Gras and give it to Montee to repay her loan to her campaign. What does a City Democratic Chair do anyway?
Posted by Melba on Thu., Mar 2, 2006 at 9:14 PMI usually find the commentary on this blog to be fairly sensible even if I don't always agree. Melba's slanderous nonsense about Wahby "stealing" money from Mardi Gras is a gross exception Karl Rove would be proud of no doubt.
Wahby has in fact given up a lot of his time and effort to mardi gras over the past several years. Before he became involved, mardi gras had no independent audit--now they do. It's very clear where the money comes from and where it goes, in large part thanks to Wahby's leadership. Having differences of opinion on politics is one thing. Why some people prefer character assassination to legitimate debate has always mystified me.
So before Melba's "Swift Boat" campaign got any further, I thought someone should set the record straight.
I really am floored by the fact that the City Democratic Chairman is attcked for endorsing the remaining Democratic candidate for auditor...
What do you guys want him to do, endorse John Loudon?
Some people are just plain wackos.
I find the comments regarding Brian Wahby and Mardi Gras to be another example of uninformed, irresponsible, slanderous, mindless prattle. The fact that anyone would engage in such unsubstantiated rumor mongering only hurts out party. I suggest that if you wish to continue these types of activites that you register as a card carrying member of the GOP where such practices are not only encouraged but recognized as valid tactics. Mardi Gras' books are audited annually. THis means that an independent review certifies the books to be in good standing and free of any wrongdoing.
Posted by Tim on Fri., Mar 3, 2006 at 9:55 AMHey Melba Toast - I'll give you an example of what a City Democratic Chairman does: In the months leading up to the Nov. 2004 election, Brian Wahby took a leave from his job to concentrate full time on the presidential campaign. He organized and mobilized the city's committeepeople, and ran the coordinated campaign in the city of St. Louis. It was through his hard work and dedication that the city produced more than 20,000 Democratic votes in 2004 than it did in 2000. Wahby worked his tail off with no desire of personal gain. He's proven to be an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Chair.
Posted by Lori Becker on Fri., Mar 3, 2006 at 10:19 AMThe attacks on Wahby are pointless and mean.
Discussion of institutional racism within the Missouri Democratic Party is not.
Posted by City Democrat on Fri., Mar 3, 2006 at 10:35 AMI am not criticizing Brian for endorsing or supporting Montee - he should follow Maida's lead - NOW - what I do criticize is the fact that he obviously was less than "enthusiastic" with regard to the Senator's run for auditor - I never read any comments from Brian supporting her - and unless I am mistaken, nor did he stand with Maida, as other city officials did, when she announced - we should commend Maida for her unselfish act in pulling out of the auditor's race prior to filing and endorsing Montee - she could have easily gone ahead and filed and caused more division for other statewide hopefuls who have their own problems to contend with due to their snubbing of her interest in the Auditor's race - I just hope those on the ballot will seek her support and put forth a good faith effort to bridge the rift which has been caused by their narrow mindedness when it comes to a black seeking higher office.
Posted by carolyn on Fri., Mar 3, 2006 at 3:34 PMClearly your senseless and unjustified claim against Wahby shows not only your lack of knowledge regarding St. Louis politics but your true intentions. We all agree that Maida is a great Senator and person and clearly deserves nothing but the best. Whether you believe it is unfortunate or fortunate she is not running for auditor, it is time to coalesce around the Democratic nominee Susan Montee. Wahby has not only worked tirelessly to help elect Democratic candidates across the board but he works harder to bring this Democratic party together in a unified fashion than just about anyone in this area. Your claim that he stole money from Mardi Gras is appalling as he only deserves praise for making a great Soulard and St. Louis tradition a terrific event.
Posted by Heb on Fri., Mar 3, 2006 at 7:16 PMI know this comment comes late, but I will add it for anyone who reads it in the archives. Brian Wahby attended Sen. Coleman's kickoff and expressed his enthusiasm for Coleman's campaign to me.
