Happy birthday Harry

Email tipster says: Just wanted to let you know that Tuesday February 21, "The Hardest Working Democrat" Senator Harry Kennedy will be celebrating his birthday. Big Bash planned in Jeff City - lots of surprises!

Hmmmm.

Is he still using that publicity shot from 1951, though?

Not harder working than Senator Joan Bray or Rep Rachel Storch though.

Neither Bray nor Storch ever represented urban and rural (as in cotton country) populations, separated by hundreds of miles, at the same time. For a period after the last redistricting, Kennedy was representing two very different geographies and putting a lot of miles on his already pitiful car. Historically, members of the Lege blow off the second turf resulting from redistricting anomolies and concentrate on serving the geography they will be running in the next election. I have many differences with Kennedy on issues but Kennedy has earned the "Hardest Working Democrat" title.

Perhaps one of the big surprises will be Harry getting all wild and crazy and not wearing a jacket and tie.

Harry Kennedy's hard working, for sure. But I'm pretty certain that Jeff Smith is the hardest working Democrat in Missouri.

Agreed, Nancy. I'm really looking forward to the day that Jeff will be working with both Senators Kennedy and Bray.

Jason's wish will be granted, but only for two years. Kennedy is term-limited in 2008. (His election to fill Scott's unexpired term preceded the effective date of the new rule that partial terms don't count.)

Partial terms only don't count if there is LESS THAN HALF of that office's time left. Someone coming in with three years left of a senator's term will still only be able to serve out those three years and run for one full four-year term.

Harry Kennedy's adaptability is impressive, but the distance from the old 3rd District in the southern third of the City of St. Louis plus parts of Affton, to the southernmost part of the new 3rd District in Carter County, is less than 200 miles. And the northernmost parts, like DeSoto and the southern environs of Festus, are not far from the southern
boundary of the 1st District he now represents.

To me, it's even more impressive that somehow Harry Kennedy, a St. Louis City Democrat, got elected to represent a district located 90% in South County. That had previously been a Republican district (Anita Yeckel). But since naturally the new rural 3rd went Republican (Kevin Engler of Farmington), it was a wash.

But I guess it's not unprecedented; City Sheriff and 12th ward committeeman Jim Murphy was once State Senator for far south City and most of South County, too. That was back when John Scott had the 3rd District.

Senator Harry Kennedy IS impressive! He loves his job and cares very much about his constituents. Come-on, his home phone number is even listed on his business cards! He tries to attend every event he is invited to --or at least tries to make an appearance. (He feels honored to be invited.) He is regarded by both the Republicans and the Democrats as being extremely fair and easy to work with.(No hidden agenda) He is Pro-Life and believes in the SANCTITY of Life from conception until death. Because of redistricting he had a very difficult task of being elected into a not only NEW district but one that was primarily Republican and his opponent (Mr. Yeckel) was riding on his wife's coattails (Anita Yeckel) His determination and hard work (along with a great campaign manager David Woodruff and A LOT of supporters) got his name and beliefs out to the voters of the 1st district. One can't help but think that he's just like one of us--a regular guy! Honest, sincere,hard-working.I wish there were more people in politics with those qualities. It will be a big loss to the 1st District and the MO Senate when he is term-limited out in 2008.

I do not think anyone here questions Harry's future beatification.

Harry's 2004 win was indeed quite an accomplishment, but the campaign wasn't flawless. I was doing a lit drop in a condo complex in the adjacent 15th district and found prior lit drops there for Harry.
