According to the PD's editorial endorsement, Barnes runs a small crafts business out of her home in Clifton Heights. That would require her to have a city business license, pay earnings tax, which she doesn't.
Dave, you just got your own home-occ 2.5 years ago, corresponding with Nextflood's official birth in state records.
Many aspiring entrepreneurs work initially from their homes unofficially before they formally start up their business. That's not tax evasion, rather working out a business plan before making it official.
So before anyone sends out the Greg Daly police on Sharon Barnes, I think the bigger question is how long has she operated such business and how formal of a business is it really.
Besides, I think many feel small businesses, especially one-person operations, should be exempt from the earnings tax.
Posted by Brian on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 9:02 AMIn other words, Brian, ignore the law because it is a Republican candidate seeking office? Interesting... We have a lot of Republicans ingnoring the law at all levels of government these days. Unfortunately for them, some US attorneys are getting indictments from Grand Juries.
Actually, I think this is much ado about nothing...Go and get a business license, Sharon. And that ends it. But Brian's cavalier attitude about it struck me as interesting.
Posted by Jack Louis on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 9:07 AMIf speaking of ignoring laws, each of the candidates for 24th alderman then have a questionable legal past. I guess voters will have to decide how each variation of "ignored laws" challenges the perception of that candidate's ethics.
If Sharon is operating a business from her home, I do agree that she should follow the law. But not knowing how long she has operated such business or even if she really makes any living off of it, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. However, since seeking public office, Sharon does open her life to public scrutiny, such that she can't really complain if the City now comes knocking on her door about a "business" she volunteered to the media.
Still, we do know that Waterhouse didn't pay past tax bills, and that Bauer sued his own constituents. To me, such actions are more telling of one's ethics than not yet reporting a home-based hobby turned small business.

As an obvious supporter of Waterhouse it's interesting that you chose to characterize Barnes as a lawbreaker without knowing all the facts. One small, vague sentence about her business a Post editorial has you comparing her with Tom Delay. Did you check into how her business operates and where she actually sells these crafts and whether the location of the sale has anything to do with whether or not she is even required ot have a business license?
Posted by infoman on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 11:10 AM"There's Independent Tom Bauer, a lawyer who had been the ward's Democratic alderman until he was recalled in September. There's Democrat William Waterhouse, an electrician and Democratic ward committeeman, who was part of the group that pushed for Mr. Bauer's recall. And there's Republican Sharon Y. Barnes, who runs a small crafts business out of her home in Clifton Heights and is the ward's GOP committeewoman."
Each candidate is described in that editorial by politics and occupation. There is a lawyer, an electrician, and a home-based business owner.
If Barnes does crafts as a hobby, that is how it should have been phrased. If she has hopes of turning her hobby into a business, that is how it should have been phrased. If she does crafts as art, then she is an artist and that is how it should have been phrased. If she just started her business in the past couple of weeks, is a new business owner, that is how it should have been phrased.
Does Barnes say she runs a small business from her home or did the Post-Dispatch pick crafts as a hobby out her resume and jazz it up into small business?
Posted by Howard on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 12:17 PMInfoman there is also rules about city earnings tax and other such taxes that should be paid.
Posted by Worried Citizen on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 12:20 PMWorried citizen,
Do you have information that she doesn't pay city earnings tax, other than Dave's statement above for which he provides no backing? Or is this just more innuendo meant to harm her campaign at the last minute? I don't care who you support, just be responsible in throwing around information that you haven't checked out at a critical time in ward politics.
Posted by infoman on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 12:59 PMSorry Infoman, I didn't mean to imply she hadn't payed city earnings tax at all, all I was saying is that if she doesn't have a business license she may not pay city earnings tax on the money she makes in that business venture or some of the other taxes that go with owning a business. I don't care who wins. I was just commenting on the fact that the business license may not be the only thing she isn't up to date on concerning her business, if it really is a business which hasn't been proven yet either.
Posted by Worried Citizen on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 3:37 PMMaybe we can all agree on one thing. The best win tonight for the City would be Waterhouse or Barnes winning. Either one would be better than Bauer.
Unfortunately, we cannot count on Bauer to retire from running for public office. He will be back next year on a ballot- school board, county office, state legislature- and/or in 2007 to run again for alderman.
Posted by Howard on Tue., Dec 13, 2005 at 6:18 PMSeems like much ado about nothing. We're not even sure if it's really a business, and if it is, it's crafts!
Posted by Business Liscenses on Tue., Nov 7, 2006 at 11:13 AMSharon's business does not require a license as she does no selling out of her home - all transactions are at other locations. Taxes are paid in the city, county, state, etc. where the sales are made. She has been in compliance with all St. Louis City laws. If anyone had bothered to contact her direct rather than making unjust accusations without proof, you would know this. Take care who you throw bricks at!
