Jim Buford is a Republican who probably supports vouchers....WTF???

Buford will easily be more in-step with the remaining members of Slay's Slate than O'Brien turned out to be.

And Vince would have been more of a liability than coattails for any slate come next election. Thus, I'm sure the school board's prez seeking re-election is very glad to be rid of all things Shameful.

The 65-percent "solution" will likely force SLPS to cut transportation and other support costs. By having GOP-man Buford on-board, the board may have more credibility to challenge the coming tough changes forced by GOP-man Blunt.

===Jim Buford is a Republican

Actually, he says he wasn't, but that because he worked with Republicans, people assumed he was. In addition, he's called Ashcroft and Bond two of the most blatantly racist people he's ever met after Ronnie White was denied a federal judicial appointment.

"The House Urban Issues Committee took no vote Wednesday on the bill co-sponsored by its chairman, Rep. Ted Hoskins, D-Berkeley, and the chairwoman of the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield.

Under the bill, businesses and individuals could donate to nonprofit groups, which would award scholarships to students to attend private or better-performing public schools.

James Buford, president of the St. Louis Urban League, said he opposes vouchers but favors this plan because the money comes from private sources. He said it would give students stuck in troubled schools an option."

So no, he's not for vouchers from the government. But keep making up stuff when it's convenient.

You all are assuming that they can win.... perhaps, but Flint won in spite of Mayor's Office and his two running mates never came close.

As head of Urban League, Buford is dependent enough on Civic Progress and Mayor's Office to be another puppet, as is the head of the Historical Society. He will most likely vote in lockstep.

It is sad that Darnetta doesn't realize that people haven't accepted her. Folks quieted down not because they accept her, but because the juggernaut always won. She, at least, went in with good intentions, even though she failed the students by voting in lockstep. The huge drop in accreditation came under her and the Mayor's office leadership.

Most of the white voters in this racially divided town probably couldn't say what James Buford does. Will be interesting to see how many white voters vote for Haas.

If Brownie opposes vouchers, the person locally to be worried about is state senate candidate Derio Gambaro. He wants Article IX, Section 8 out of the Missouri Constitution.

Buford is a situational Republican, i.e., whenever it suits his interests. He was officially a Republican member of the County Board of Election Commissioners during the Mel Carnahan Administration, but governors always try to pack the board with their own supporters who can effectively pose as a member of the other party, to assure partisan control of the election operations. (That's what this year's ongoing dispute over one of Blunt's Democratic city board members is all about.) I thought it was indiscreet when Buford, newly appointed to that GOP slot in 1993, was present at Democratic Mayor-elect Freeman Bosley's general election victory party, visibly celebrating Bosley's win over his "own" party's candidate.

City Parent's observations about the likelihood of Buford's economic dependence on Civic Progress and the Mayor's office are very astute.

This year's retention of O'Brien and election of Fowler gave the school board its first-ever African American majority. Replacing Schoemehl with Buford ups that racial majority to 5-2. It will indeed be interesting to see how white voters react to re-electing/retaining two black incumbents (Clinkscales and Buford) in that context. Buford's alleged Republican ties could be just the excuse white Democrats need to salve their consciences. At least two whites have already announced their school board candidacies, former Board member Bill Haas and two-time candidate Peter Downs, although neither will intentionally play that race card.

Oops. Make that "City" Election Board.

so he's not for vouchers but he is for small privatization measures as long as the private sector pays its own way in its assault on public education.

he'll fit in with the slay krew, for sure.

James Buford is probably one of the best choices around for this slot, from Slay and Schoemehl's point-of-view.

I think I'd even vote for him - even though he's a Republican, the local Urban League is a pretty well-run organization. (Of course, I know the CFO/COO, so it's not surprising I'd think that.)

Buford was also recently named 1st Congressional District member of the "Missouri State University" (FKA Southwest Missouri State University) Board of Governors.

This suggests he is pretty friendly with Gov. Blunt. I noticed the 3rd Cong Dist seat is still open on the MSU Board - I wonder who will get it?

===so he's not for vouchers but he is for small privatization measures as long as the private sector pays its own way in its assault on public education.

I received private scholarships to go to a private, religiously affiliated college. In fact, I received government assistance to do that. Is that an assault on public education?
