Zimmerman to run for State Rep.

Anonymous tip, plus a few phone calls and I feel pretty good passing on this rumor: Jake Zimmerman will be dropping out of the 5th District County Council race and running for Barbara Fraser's rep seat - 83rd District.

I think Jake could be a good elected official, too. It is unfortunate he decided to relocate to a state rep district that already has a fabulous candidate for Fraser's soon-to-be-open seat. Her name is Teresa Kendrick and she has my support because she is right on all the issues and she is a woman. I hate to give up a seat to a man that is currently held by a woman. Women are losing numbers in legislatures all across the country.

Was't that the Susie Shear seat? The traditional woman's seat in St. Louis County? So Barbara Fraser endorsed Jake over a woman running for Susie Shears old seat. Is nothing sacred anymore? Shame shame shame........ I won't vote for Kurt, but I sure won't vote for Barbara Fraser.

Why don't we wait until we see who is the better candidate before we decide who to vote for. Saying that you will only vote for a person because of their gender without an examiination of thier issues is just plain silly. If Jake was running against Phyllis Schlafly then obviously it would be better for Dems to vote for Jake.

There should not be "traditional" seats, that what elections are for. To limit good candidates because it has been "traditionally" held seat weakens the party and make Dems look like beholden to spaecial interests.

I don't know Teresa, i'm sure she is good on the issues, but I also know that Jake would also be a powerful advocate for women's issues as well as other progressive issues.

..and don't come back at me and say that only women can advocate passionately for women's issues because we can cite historic examples of how good change came from outside of the interest group that originally sought the change.

Stlguy: why am I not surprised that you just don't get it. No one is saying Jake won't vote right...but why should I be happy that a guy is voting right (taking care of us) when it should be a woman. How many men are in the legislature and how many women. Obviously it will be one less woman now thanks to Barbara and Jake.

Margaret - First, you are assuming that Teresa loses to Jake. If she is a good candidate, she should win a primary. Secondly, your premise that a women is somehow entitled to a seat seems flawed. We do not live in a State where women are somehow marginalized in politics. Our last three nominees for the U.S. Senate have been women, we have 2 Dem. women statewide holders and we have 1 R. women statewide. The last Democratic nominee for Govenor was a woman. The head of the MDHCC is a woman and the Missouri Senate Minority Leader is a woman. the two frontrunners for the Dem. Nomination for Auditor are women. The St. Louis regional delegation has 3 women Senators, and the House delegation from the St. Louis area has a great representaion of women...So if your premise is that in the Dem. Party, or in the St. Louis region that women are somehow underrepresented, I think you are wrong. Thinking that gender somehow gives a person a right to a seat or would somehow be better seems false and fake. I'll give another concrete example, Sue Schoemel is pro-life..Jake Zimmerman is pro-choice, both are Dems, but who would you rather represent your views on the subject?

Thank you Charlie Dooley for assisting in getting Mr.Zimmerman to run for the legislature to replace Ms.Fraser. I think Jake is great but Dems did not need to spend big money in a primary for the Council seat when there is one great Canidate in the race already. We need to keep our powder dry to take on Kurt.

Is it true that Jake moved into the district to be able to run for this seat after Barb agreed to support his candidacy for her former seat? If so, that assures that I will not support Zimmerman or Frasier. Back room deal making like that is simply disgusting. I hope people start to pay attention to the way politicians care primarily about obtaining and maintaining political power, regardless of party. Barb has said many times in the past that the she would like to see this seat go to a woman, but as soon as there is any threat to her next candidacy she uses her influence to buy off her competition. Jake, after announcing a candidacy for county council b/c he cares so much about St. Louis county, moves into a district where he has no prior connection simply to be able to run for the open Democratic rep seat there. Both are examples of political opportunism that should not be tolerated. Neither of these candidates will get my vote.

I agree that more women are needed in the legislature, however, sex alone should not dictate who is a better candidate, particularly when they are both pro-choice advocates. Having met both Jake and Teresa, I think that they are both very quaulified. Two viable candidates = good debate and an interesting primary race.
