As much as Tom acted like his pet, especially when suing your own constituents, I am really turned off by how much anti-development sentiment there is among recall, and now Waterhouse, supporters.
Until Waterhouse is elected, I would hope other aldermen would sponsor the needed ordinances to approve all projects that already had a significant bureaucratic piece in place, like Planning Commission recommendation. The only cases for hesitation are those proposals in early stages, like blighting bills, which could easily be placed on hold.
Despite the tradition of aldermanic courtesy for development within one's ward challenges others to sponsor items related to the 24th, maybe another, like BOA Pres Shrewsbury, could intervene, or an alderman of a ward where infill is less controversial. Though it would be ironic if Vollmer sponsored items following the ousting of his former opponent, the Milo's Man did once run to represent the 24th.
Posted by Brian on Thu., Oct 27, 2005 at 8:50 AMI think most rational city residents would understand the need for eminent domain to take such property as junk yards and vacant abandoned property in order to create more housing as opposed to occupied, residential and commercial property to build new retail in an area that already has significant retail choices. A walk through the campaign finance reports of most local aldermen shows that the relationship between our local political leaders and city development interests is extremely tight. Perhaps a stepping back in a few key wards--propelled by recall if necessary--might allow for some time to think about how development should be done and what tools should and should not be used to encourage it.
On another note, I see that the Janet Becker piece above mentioned a "Bosely estate" project. Anyone have a idea what that is?
