Kratky to endorse Smith

According to reliable sources, Fred Kratky will soon be endorsing Jeff Smith for the Senate 4th District.

UPDATE: Here it is: Today, State Representative Fred Kratky (D-65) announced that he has endorsed and will support Jeff Smith, Democratic candidate for the 4th State Senate seat.

Kratky said, "Jeff showed people his abundant energy, his work ethic, and his grasp of public policy in his race for Congress last year, and I know that he will bring those skills to the state Senate. While we may not agree on every single issue, I am confident that he will work harder than anyone else to represent the very diverse 4th state senate district. His expertise on the policy process will be welcomed by Senate Democrats and I look forward to working with him in the Legislature."

The 16th Ward Democratic Organization is an open ward with members that vote on endorsements.

So, what does that have to do with Kratky's personal endorsement? Nothing, I don't think. It just gives Jeff a better chance of receiving the ward's support.

The 16th Ward has some history of competing sample ballots distributed at the polls, ward organization v. others.

Who gets the 16th Ward's endorsement mostly depends who is a dues paying member, who keeps the records of who is a member, who puts out the meeting notice, who gets the meeting notice, the length of time between members receiving notice and the meeting, who shows up to vote.

Fred's endorsing not the ward organization. Still, even if Jeff now later earns the ward's endorsement, it still carries little at the polls, especially in the City's 16th where straight-ticket voters are the least numerous. Besides, Jeff carried the City in the 3rd CD primary, despite any ward endorsements.

And in the 16th, the Dem ward organization (the GOP's is large in this city corner) did endorse Darlene Green for Comptroller (along with FGS when he first ran for mayor), but 16th voters still foolishly voted more so for Tom Bauer in 2001. So, progressive endorsements from 16th leaders or organizations don't necessarily sway this area's mostly conservative constituents.

Back to Fred's endorsement though, this just shows the continued split between St. Louis Hills and The Hill for Southwest City influence in state politics. Kratky doesn't like Gambaro for having to win against Gambaro-backed Clements when Fred first won state rep. So, with the rumors of Derio entering the race, this endorsement of Jeff may be partly Fred's payback.

16th Ward St. Louis Hills v. 10th Ward The Hill? ROFL! I think 23rd Ward Lindenwood & Tilles have more influence at state level. It's not only the Mayor's turf but also home to three county elected officials. There is more to influencing state legislation and policy than having a vote in the Lege.

Sen. Kennedy is from Southampton and Sen. Dougherty is from Tower Grove, so that St. Louis Hills v. The Hill rivalry is working out well.

Clements ran a horrible campaign. It wasn't that difficult for Kratky to pick up the seat.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that there is a committeewoman in the 16th Ward and she's originally from The Hill and works for Belt of Power.

Considering Shrewsbury's eye on the Board President seat, was 16th's endorsement of Comptroller Green a progressive action or a practical political move?

Having known Jim Shrewsbury for over 20 years I can tell you that everything he does is politically practical. Progressive actions and public service are secondary. He lives and breathes politics.

===Kratky doesn't like Gambaro for having to win against Gambaro-backed Clements when Fred first won state rep.

The timing is kind of hard--Fred probably made the decision before Gambaro threw his name out there.

Just remember that the 10th ward is new and unorganized. Heck, when The Hill was part of the 24th, it was unorganized then, leading to Bauer's aldermanic win.

But overall, SW City politics don't stay within ward boundaries. The 23rd is the rare exception with a strong ward organization, but otherwise, most SW City politics follows neighborhood organizations more so than ward committees.
