Should Wash U tolerate homophobic professors?

A question asked by a contributor in the current issue of Wash U's Student Life, about Prof. Katz.

Katz is a clown. More later, but it's academic freedom. There is no reason nor justification to censor his views on or off Wash U's site.

I'm going with AP on this one. While I find this professors' views abhorrent, I think that tolerance for unpopular opinions is a critical part of a free society.

Who really cares what an astro-physicist thinks about gay rights, anyway?

He's a tenured full professor, so he can't realistically be fired based on this. Maybe these essays violate the intent of the University web policy; but who is going to enforce that consistently? Plenty of student web spaces probably have violations as well, albeit not so high-profile.

Larry's right - it's an academic freedom matter.
