PRESS RELEASE
JEFFERSON CITY - Minority Leader Jeff Harris (D-Columbia) and Assistant Minority Leader Paul LeVota (D-Independence) represented Missouri at the Democratic Leadership Council's (DLC) National Conversation this past weekend in Columbus, OH. The House's two top Democrat leaders joined hundreds of national, state and local elected officials to explore the theme of "Heartland Values, Bold Solutions: An American Reform Agenda."
The Conversation seeks to sketch out relevant policies to the four big challenges facing our country today: security and winning the war on terror, restoring economic growth, defending American values and reforming the nation's broken political system.
Harris has been involved with the DLC since he was elected to the Missouri House in 2002. This is LeVota's first year of involvement.
That's discouraging. The DLC's mantra is "Pander to the Right." Won't anybody stand up for progressives?
Posted by St Louis Oracle on Tue., Jul 26, 2005 at 1:05 PMProgressives can stand up for themselves. They could try winning some elections and getting a majority of democrats in the state house in order to elect progressive leadership. In fact, wasnt Jeff elected without opposition? I could be wrong here, since I'm not privy to caucus vote totals. until then, the asseration that somehow jeff and paul arent standing up for progressives is nutty. they stand up for anyone who considers themselves a democrat, and anyone downtrodded, oppressed or in need of a hand.
and enough with the DLC bashing. progressives are just as bad as some from the dlc in their intra-party ideological attacks. go to dailykos.com if you wanna jawbone with some like-minded DLC haters. or stevegilliard.blogspot.com or atrios.blogspot.com lord knows theres enough DLC critics out there.
President Clinton was part of the DLC. I thought he was quite progressive and if I recall he served 2 terms as President. It's easy to critique others. The DLC is a good group and Jeff and Paul are actually slugging it out in the trenches while we bitch and moan from our living rooms. I think we need to try to work together with EVERYONE from our party and stop accusing people of not being "liberal" enough.
Posted by Dr. Slice on Tue., Jul 26, 2005 at 2:00 PMAs someone who would generally describe himself as in line with the DLC ideologically especially on trade issues, I've had it with Al From decided to take on others in the party through the mouthpiece of the GOP and cult leader Moon in the form of the Washington Times. How about he actually do something like organize voters and create new outreach programs before bitching away in the Moonie Times?
Centrist Democrats have a far better alternative in Simon Rosenberg's New Democrat Network
