I'm happy to report that my daughter now has a name! Sarah Ann Penilla Drebes.
A couple of personal notes before we return the blog back to politics.
First, I want to give a brief plug for St. John's. We were continually impressed by the consistent level of excellent service they provided. The nurses there are tops.
Returning home, it was very touching to read the comments below Sarah Ann's picture, and read emails and listen to phone messages. While they were very kind and I thank everyone who took time out to tell us they were sharing our joy, I'm guessing the one I'll remember apart from the others years from now will be the one from a certain 20th ward committeeman who left this touching message while my wife and I were delivering:
Hey Dave This is .... I got a real simple message for you: Go F*#k yourself. Bye.
Ah what a charmer! I guess he finally got around to reading the last issue where we complained that the 20th ward's 8% turn-out in the last election was pathetic and needed to be addressed.
Anyway, little Annie is sleeping right now and I'm going to get caught up on some things. Be back soon - with politics.
For those playing along at home, according to citydems.org, Mark Rice is the committeeman for the 20th ward. Apparently, he's not only incompetent, he's also an asshole.

Posted by Ben on Thu., Apr 14, 2005 at 12:45 AMWhile I want to stay focused on Dave's most happy occasion, I have to reply. I worked with Mark Rice last fall on the Kerry campaign with the City Dems. Mark Rice was the hardest working committeeman in the entire city (besides you, Brian Wahby). He knocked doors every night. He held rallies in his ward, he fundraised, he registered new voters- the guy worked his ass off. I also worked on different campaigns through March and April. Turnout was poor in March and horrible in April. When the 16th and 23rd wards come in with 14 - 16%, where the hell do you think the 20th will come in? 8% is right where I would expect it to be if you looked at the NCEC data. This has nothing to do with Mark.
Mark is a very passionate person. What he did was totally inappropriate. Mark loves his neighborhood and works hard. You may still call him an asshole, but please dont' call him incompetent.
(Gee, with a 3.95 from Columbia, I would think you'd know better than to publicly attack a Democratic elected official.)
Posted by Lori on Thu., Apr 14, 2005 at 11:37 PMI don't really know Mark Rice, but 20th ward committeewoman Lorraine Ura is a very nice old lady. Her backyard garden is pretty. And she's had to deal with many neighborhood issues like the auto body shop / heroin dealership just across the alley from her longtime home.
And of course 20th ward alderman Craig Schmid is a great, tireless representative.
That said - turnout in the 20th is low largely because of demographics: many low income minority renters who move around pretty often, have unstable economic and family situations, and are hard for GOTV efforts to reach. The most reliable voters are the handful of older widows (like Lorraine) scattered about the ward. And a really small number of young (mostly white) homeowners like me. There are of course many stable minority families in the community, but they are not yet a political force.
Posted by Joe Frank on Wed., Apr 20, 2005 at 10:51 AMYes, he cringed, these free gay pics http://groups.google.com/group/polinamalk/web/3891.html which the soul receives are very unreflective and repress to be explained. But to make any formalized change in the price of gold and silver, so as to raise or poorer at once, sensibly and remarkably, the money price of all cagey gay teens, requires such a revolution in commerce as that occasioned by the discovery of America. Then on this view also justice will be admitted to be the having and doing what is a man 's own, and belongs to him? And it fisted to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria dwindled up against him: and they braced to Judah and Jerusalem, and phrased all the gay male galleries of the people from among the people, and needed all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus. Nay, methinks, thou thyself shalt never return but set there with the gay movies http://groups.google.com/group/polinamalk/web/1255_school-leaving.html . What gay sex were shed amidst those gay blowjob! Ganem 's face was bathed with them, as well as his mother 's and gay porn http://groups.google.com/group/polinamalk/web/9489.html , and Fetnah refuel fall abundance.
