Joseph P. Roddy, Sr., died Monday. Longtime Alderman of the 17th Ward and Clerk of the Circuit Court. Wake at Kriegshauser's South on Wednesday from 4-8. Funeral at the New Cathedral on Thursday at 10.
The passing of Joe Roddy marks the end of a political era in St. Louis. Joe was the last of his generation of ward leaders who for years greatly influenced the politics of our City. Joe's contemporaries included Red Villa, Midge Berra, Jordan Chambers, Ray Leisure and Louie Buckowitz. In their prime they could swing elections by truly delivering their wards. There are plenty of great stories of national candidates paying visits to these men currying favor and endorsements which could swing the city, state and in some cases the nation. The careers of these politicians were marked by direct service to their constituencies. I am sure that Joe fixed any number of potholes, parking tickets and placed a few needy people in jobs at city hall. For sure there were a few hungry families who enjoyed a Christmas meal because of Joe Roddy and his 17th Ward FDR Club.
In the days of email blasts and inNo matter how one views the days of machine politics, we have to remember some of the lessons that that generation taught… ultimately public service is about serving the needs of people and that is precisely what many of the old bosses did.
Rest in peace Mr. Roddy and thanks for the lessons.
