The Philadelphia Story, Part 1
[March 25, 2005 -- The two articles reprinted below, illustrate one way in which Creg Williams differs Rudy Crew, the man anointed by the St. Louis school board last year to become the new superintendent.
Crew spoke disparagingly of shallow high school curricula that skimmed over masses of material. Pointing to English literature texts, for example, he would say schools are wrong to use texts that compile selections from dozens of works. He argued instead that students need to read fewer works but whole works so they can see how book-length stories develop with a beginning,a middle, and an end.
Williams, as the bureaucrat in charge of secondary education in Philadelphia, appears to have embraced skimming with a vengeance.
