Bartle on Stem Cells

I haven't watched this yet. Roy Temple posted it over at Fired Up. It is State Senator Bartle speaking at his church about stem cell research.

Sen. Bartle is not the only one speaking on this issue from a faith perspective. Dozens of faith leaders from several denominations have organized to oppose a ban on stem cell research and therapies in MO. Sen. Bartle has taken it to a new level, however, by videotaping it his comments for internet distribution.

The church in question tapes and makes available on the web most of the sermons (or whatever quaint term they have to seem more hip) as well as guest speakers.

For a Mega-Church they are still behind Willow Creek that does the same, but includes the worst acted role plays supporting creationism I've ever seen.

It's a relatively small strategy in conservative evangelical efforts to create its own method of distributing their message through alternative media. What's great about the video is the mandatory complaint about how the media just doesn't listen and present the evidence--yet nearly everything can be found in even a mediocre paper like the P-D.

The larger point being the culture gulf between conservative evangelicals and urban dwelling main line church goers and secular residents is still huge. Equating main line clergy taking a position or speaking out misses the entire infrastructure that conservative evangelicals have created and how they use it to organize and stay under the radar of typical media.

Mainline clergy aren't playing the same game conservative evangelicals are and worst of all, most haven't figured out how much the game changed 15 years ago.

Bill Clinton chose Bill Hybels to be one of his spiritual advisors after the Lewinsky scandal and yet most Democrats still have no idea who he is. Clinton knew and understood the changing nature of conservative evangelicals, but Democrats and moderate and liberal religious leaders didn't even notice when he tapped a leading conservative evangelical for help.
