Bad News at CAMP

A city building inspector has shut down the public space at the Community Arts & Media Project (CAMP) Building at 3022 Cherokee in Gravois Park. The inspector issued a stop-work order and has threatened condemnation if CAMP has any more public events there before obtaining a legal permit. (CAMP had a public "grand opening" February 5 without a lawful permit as well as several meetings for political groups.)

Political groups who met in the permitless public area included the Missouri Green Party and the Green Party Central Committee.

Another CAMP tenant, the St. Louis Independent Media Center, seems to be having problems of its own. Its web site (http://www.stlimc.org/) has been "under renovation" for over a month, which has kept the open-posting Newswire shut down (The most recent Newswire post was January 22).

Apparently StLIMC is moving to a new server and has been having trouble actually making the switch. The site's pages are available, but none of its functions work (namely, posting) because they aren't on the new server yet.

Word is that it may be a few weeks before their site comes back up -- definitely after the primary.

It's be nice if they actually mentioned this on their site, though, instead of giving the illusion of a functioning site.

According to public records, CAMP applied for an occupancy permit for the "Ground Floor Office" space on 02/24/05. Their building permit for the space - est. cost $30k - was issued 06/16/04.

Somebody must have called CSB and complained, because there's a Zoning related complaint on the property dated 02/10/05. Status is "notice to be sent."

For those who care, both CAMP and STLIMC went thru some serious growing pains for much of last year, including being booted by their net provider, troubles with the alderman, and, as mentioned, theats of condemnation. Both website are back up, and STLIMC is fully functional with new software. CAMP will also be opening in summer 2006.

Support from local community leaders is always appreciated.
