Ran into the towering Chris Thomas at lunch today who informed me that there are closing signs in both Payless and OfficeMax in St. Louis Marketplace.
I think we can - as Marston would say - stick a fork in it.
I am of course angry, but not surprised that this has happened. Can a stretch of land get any more barren...oh, yeah.....look at Kingshighway north of Delmar and most of the state streets in South St. Louis. Maybe that Lowes Mayor Slay keeps talking about is moving in......
Posted by Rob Thurman on Fri., Feb 25, 2005 at 3:24 PMDag, yo. Maybe I put OfficeMax out of business by getting so many things there for free after rebate. Ike's sorry, baby! He didn't mean to hurt you.
Posted by Brian Marston on Fri., Feb 25, 2005 at 3:49 PMHey, we've got plenty of gunfire - day and night - on the state streets! And occasional rock-throwing too. It's one of the highest density parts of the City - which is not necessarily a good thing.

PS: The decline of StL Marketplace has been ongoing since it was built. It's not necessarily a reflection on the neighborhoods surrounding it. Oh - and I must point out there's now an OfficeMax at Southtowne Centre, Kingshighway & Chippewa, so the City is not exactly Max-ed out. ;-)
Thanks to Midland Development, eminent domain and the now very popular TIF (of which St. Louis Marketplace was the 1st in this area) a viable manufacturing facility was basically run out of town. Anyone remember Missouri Rolling Mill? Yeah it was "blighted" allright. But tell me, what the hell do they call it now?
Posted by Scott MacDonald on Tue., Mar 22, 2005 at 9:10 PMI just stumbled on to this site, but just thougt I'd let you know that per the STL Post-Dispatch (Southwest Edition), a dance shoe factory (little girls' ballet, etc.) will open there. They will have a retail store.

Posted by Sage on Tue., May 24, 2005 at 7:42 AMEminent domain is eroding the tax base and working the city staff in the wrong direction.
ED must be used in order to continue the land reform underway. It is also the best way to turn public money and property over to the rich. The city will continue to be a third rate city until the elected officals start to read the board bills they collectively pass.
