The YOUNG Democrats endorsed Kirner over someone half her age? Lovely.

The Young Democrats are about as youthful these days as Metropolis St. Louis members. Never judge a group's composition and stance by its name or even mission statement.

They also endorsed Rick Johnson in the 22nd Senatorial Race

The Young Democrats endorsement is a joke. Only two people were entitled to vote on the endorsement b/c no one shows up at their meetings frequently enough to be eligible to vote.

From what I understand, there was no agenda for the meeting. One of Kirner's supporters called for an endorsement and got the vote on it before Steve got to the meeting. At least in the 25th ward race, they did not even let the candidates know there might be a vote or give them a chance to appeal to the group.

Holding these types of meetings that alienate part of the Democratic base is a quick way for this group to become obsolete. These guys should not be making any endorsements in primary races. It is just foolish to divide Democrats like that.

Just as a point of comparison, the St. Louis Area Young Republicans have it in our by-laws that the club can never issue an endorsement in a primary. Sometimes that is tough, where one candidate may be well known to the club and liked and has supported the club, and the other candidate(s) completely unknown, but the rule has served the club well over the long-run.

While I won't completely slag on the group, I think its far less relevant than Change for Missouri/DFA that isn't age based, but certainly can mobilize a lot more young voters.

I am new to the St. Louis Young Dems., and I agree that its membership and activities have been dwindling, but I do see it as an organization with a lot of potential. At this last meeting changes were made so that in the coming months the group will see an upswing in membership and productivity.
To address a few of the issues previous posters have had,
• Endorsing in primaries is obviously a double-edged sword. On the down side, you will anger those who are not endorsed. On the other hand, in an area like the City of St. Louis where the question is not IF the Democrat will get elected, but WHICH Democrat will get elected, a group is severely hamstrung if it is unable to affect the primary process.
• The Young Dems. should not be limited to endorsing the younger candidate but instead should focus on endorsing the candidate that they think will better achieve the goals of the Democratic Party. I do believe that both Dorothy Kirner and Steve Patterson would serve the 25th ward splendidly, and the voters in that ward are lucky to receive a no lose situation.

This 'endorsement slate' is ridiculous. I understand that there were some issues with the voting and whatnot, but if you're not going to operate the process fairly or thoughtfully, I would suggest not doing it at all. If anyone is interested in a more informed approach, I would check out the St. Louis League of Pissed Off Voters blog. The STL LOPOV is a local group made up of younger people that put out a candidate survey, collected the responses, and then based their endorsements on what the candidates actually had to say, rather than what a Kirner supporter had to say. As for the Giants, their own happiness was short-lived as they lost to - who else?
