Slay Saves Some Parishes?

Post reports that Mayor met with Archbishop Burke to show him trend population numbers and persuade him that some parishes and schools shouldn't close.

We're hearing from a reliable source that the Mayor had some success and that a half dozen or so of the thirteen parishes and schools slated for closing will remain open.

If so, this would be very good news. It would also fit a pattern going back to at least the Rigali era, when several parishes were closed in North County, near the city border: Let the committee be the "bad guy" recommending lots of parish closures and consolidations, and let the Archbishop be the "good guy" by trimming back the list. It might be the first good PR move the he has made.

Is this the same as when the mayor "saved" the school district from a teacher's strike? Bill Haas says he saved the school district.

The reported "meeting" with the AB sounds like nothing more than an election-time PR stunt that is mutual beneficial to both the mayor and the AB.

What will Francis tell us he "saved" next?
