Latest campaign finance filings for Mayor
Irene Smith raised $10,375; spent $4,596; has $5,778 on-hand.
Bill Haas raised $5,050 (of which $5,000 is debt); spent $3,917; has $1,082 on-hand.
Francis Slay raised $277,680 (bringing his election total to a little under $1.5 million); spent $228,652; has $749,029 on-hand.
Smith's expenditures include $350 to Cheap Towing. So far then towing makes up 7% of her campaign expenses?
Haas loaned himself $5,000 and received a $50 donation from Bill Purdy.
Geez...how can Slay justify a warchest like that when there is no serious competition for the office? That's just obscene. There are going to be some serious parties going on as part of his campaign I guess.

maybe there's no serious competition because of the size of the war chest.

Posted by rick on Mon., Jan 31, 2005 at 9:16 AMThe thing to keep in mind is a warchest like that lets you spread around money to build coalitions. The Mayor was very popular in Boston last year because he had such a strong finance operation.
Is it good for democracy? Probably not, but the system provides every incentive in the world to do this sort of hording.

Posted by Brian Marston on Mon., Jan 31, 2005 at 7:34 PMActually Metropolis elections have more because of the 'I wonder if all positions will be filled?' factor.

Joe, wanna build the suspense? Why don't *you* run for the Metropolis SC? Ooops, I almost forgot. You're like us: too old. Sorry!
