ArchPundit in our thoughts and prayers

His websites, widely-read blogs about St. Louis and Illinois politics, were torpedoed by spammers over the weekend.

How about dedicating some real resources to figuring out how to enforce our anti-spamming laws?

Un-freaking-believeable!! The guy's got two of the best logs out there and for a bunch of idiots to torpedo his blogs...there's just NO excuse.

I usually don't advocate violence, but someone oughta track these idiots down and give them a Todd Bertuzzi-style faceplant

Brian/Amanda, hope you can get Archie back up and running soon!!

Ug. I've been working to resolve this problem for two days straight.

ArchPundit got hit with 750 spam comments from hundreds of different IP addresses advertising www.p*ker-me-up.c*m on 12/31/04. The requests came in about every five seconds until the server was shut down.

I spent a full week in December implementing various anti-spam measures. As a more Draconian method to thwart the spammers, I've been trying to install a "captcha" plugin for Movable Type that would require people to enter a random security code before posting a comment. The plugin uses the GD Graphics Library ( http://www.boutell.com/gd/ ). I think something is wrong with the installation of GD on the server because it's throwing the following error:

/usr/bin/perl: relocation error: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/GD/GD.so: undefined symbol: gdFontGetGiant

I'm working on getting that resolved so I can turn ArchPundit's blogs back on. I think I might finally be making some headway (see http://forums.cpanel.net/showthread.php?p=161581 . Sorry about the downtime.

As a frustrating sidenote, I had to edit my comment above twice to get it past the comment filter. It's blocking me, but not the spammers! Oh the humanity!

Sickening.

Blocking you, Brian, but not the spammers...

I know you're doing all you can to get both blogs back up, so don't worry.

As for the spammers...OK, I'm gonna quit while I'm behind *LOL*
