Schnucks/Shoppers suck.

Former American journalist Tavia Evans does a number on urban grocery shoppers today in the Post.

We shop too heavily around payday. We go too often and buy too little. We steal shopping carts. In short, we're unprofitable.

It's time someone (maybe someone with a small independent paper?) did the story about how the Schnucks in my neighborhood sucks.

I used to think all the talk about "good" Schnucks and "bad" Schnucks was paranoia. But having lived the bad Schnucks and visited the good ones. It's true. If urban stores are unprofitable, there's more to blame than the customers. How about the moldy "fresh" basil? The crappy fruit? The wilted green beans? The fortressed liquor aisle? The chronic understaffing and everyday long lines?

Schnuck's sucks because every dollar you spend in their stores help fund their development projects such as sprawl shopping centers in St. Charles county and parking garages in place of historic buildings downtown.

I'm no longer shopping at Schnuck's - with choices like Straub's, Shop-N-Save, J's International, City Grocers, Aldi, Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Trader Joes who needs the friendliest stores in town?

It is easy to rail on Schnuck's, they are the standard. I choose to shop at Schnuck's, with some Straub's, in Richmond Heights due to it being on my way home from work. I find the 'shopping experience' to be good, and the prices, while not rock bottom, within my budget.

Schnuck's is at least keeping the money, or some of it, in the region. With the exception of Straub's, I am not sure where the other grocery money goes. Traders Joe's is in California, I think. Aldi is not local and neither is Whole Foods. Those companies follow the dollar just like everyone else.

Trader Joe's, or any supermarket, doesn't have a store out in West County as a hobby. Somehow, Schnuck's is held to a different standard.

On "good" and "bad" Schnucks stores:

I spent 20+ minutes waiting in the customer service desk around noon today at the Grand/Gravois store. The quality of service and product in general is definitely lower at that store than at many others I've visited. It's a little better during daytime hours, and really bad at night.

That said, it's still the only grocery store within walking distance of my house, other than Save-A-Lot or QuikTrip, so it'll still get a big chunk of change from me.

Still, when we can, we prefer to shop at the Gravois/Hampton store. Selection is much better, and it's inside the City limits (barely). Sometimes we shop the Hampton Village store, but with Target closing, we probably won't be over there very often for awhile. Some people say the Arsenal store is also better, but Gravois or Chippewa is just a much faster drive. Too many four-way stops on Arsenal.

The Schnucks on Zumbehl in St. Charles was my first shopping experience when I moved to Missouri. I came from Wyoming where you knew the clerk of your store and they were kind and gracious. I have stopped shopping at Schnucks because of the clerks who are busy talking to each other and they are rude to your face. There is not a thank you for shopping at our store, instead you are handed your change and they go back to talking to the other clerks.
I gave them a second chance after 2 years absence
and there wasn't a change. You know why they have to advertise " The Friendliest Store In Town" because they don't live it and they are getting new unsuspecting customers.
