Green Time

From Don Fritz:

While the US averages 2% of children under six years being lead poisoned, the
rate is at least 25% in St. Louis. In addition to learning difficulties and damage to many body systems, lead can increase violence by interfering with the brain's production of serotonin. Host Don Fitz and guest Barbara Chicherio of the Green Party of St. Louis discuss the need for a lead emergency.

This episode of Green Time includes the September 2004 Pesto Feast lecture by Dr. Lee Blount. Dr. Blount, with Health & Environmental Justice, explains problems lead causes children and the mismanagement of lead money in St. Louis.

Please see the "Childhood Lead Poisoning in The City of St. Louis" Annual Report 2003 on the City Department of Health website for the current figures. (stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/health -- link to Lead Poisoning Annual Reports is listed in the left hand column) The prevalence rate in 2003 was 13.6% and the incidence rate was 9.7%. This is somewhat lower than the 25% listed in this article. Nevertheless, Mayor Slay's "Lead Safe St. Louis: A Comprehensive Action Plan for the Eradication of Childhood Lead Poisoning in St. Louis by 2010" outlines the City's Lead Safe St. Louis program and may be linked from the City's home page. Numerous community organizations (including Health and Environmental Justice) have partnered with the City's Department of Health, the Building Division of the Department of Public Safety, and the St. Louis Community Development Administration in this mission to make St. Louis' kids and homes lead safe.
