The usual disclaimer, I should have mentioned yesterday: These numbers come from unofficial results, and my work with them involves a fair amount of scribbling, eye-balling, and rounding. So don't live and die by these numbers.

Kerry out polled McCaskill in 26 of 28 wards, including one tie. I thought the opposite would true. I didn't imagine many Kerry/Blunt voters.
Posted by Ezzard Charles on Mon., Nov 8, 2004 at 12:16 PMThe election is over. We can not hold our tongues any longer. 52% for Russ against Federer in a Presidential year? This district was designed as 60/40 slam dunk. We stick with Russ at our own peril. When the Republicans target him in 06 he will lose. The Carnahan name is not going to get any better. The more we see of this guy the worse it is. It's time to dump Russ before we lose the the 3rd District to the Republicans.
Posted by Doug Vincent on Mon., Nov 8, 2004 at 11:28 PMRight Doug-another primary fight lots of money it sounds like Claire McCaskil all over again. Russ stands for broad party values-the primary choices against him would either be a conservative pro-choice Democrat (who might as well be a Republican) or a more left wing candidate who really might lose.
Posted by Norm Pressman on Tue., Nov 9, 2004 at 2:39 AMPerhaps you can explain how Holden would have gotten more votes than Claire? Other than whining about divisive primaries have you bothered to analyze why the Governor was so unpopular he lost the primary? He's a great guy, but a bad Governor.
The Democratic Party isn't about cronies feeling good about each other, it's about advancing ideas that we hold common. You have confused friends and relationships with promoting ideals.
Russ is a bad candidate is why he did poorly. He can't communicate with voters effectively and he can't frame issues in a language voters can understand. Jeff did better at this and would have done better against Federer.
I have no idea why you perceive Russ to be a better candidate or how Jeff is left wing. The only issue Jeff is to the left of Russ on is Russ' shameful support of Holcim. Jeff is to the right of Russ on fiscal responsibility and educational reform. Russ ran on a similar position in terms of gay rights, but couldn't articulate the point well. How could Federer exploit that any further?
Here here, Arch Pundit. Finally someone who calls a spade a spade. It is not rocket science or even political science, it is just human nature: Russ Carnahan is an unappealing human being. If you're halfway intelligent, then he is even less appealing, but even if it is not intelligence you value in a congressman, he is still a zero. Jeff might have been a little wacky at times (the bike ride across the district, playing basketball in a TV commercial when he probably should have tried to look congressional instead of like a high school kid,) but he sure would have made an interesting congressman.
