Statement From Jeff Smith Campaign Press Secretary Arthur Harris
The record shows Russ Carnahan has one of the worst attendance records in the Missouri legislature. He missed more work than 120 (82%) of his colleagues in the State House in 2003 and more work than 132 (88%) of his colleagues in 2004. Throughout his career he has missed crucial votes on core progressive values such as healthcare, education, protecting the environment, and conceal and carry. That's what the record shows.
Jeff Smith has shown throughout his life that he is dedicated to the core progressive values he has focused his campaign on. While teaching courses at Washington University, Jeff spent thousands of hours working to provide high quality public education to children in St. Louis city. Jeff Smith is exactly the kind of representative we need in Washington D.C. He has a record of accomplishment, vision, and hard work.
does this make Jo Ann Karll the Phantom Menace?

don't get me going on the clone wars...
Posted by dave drebes on Fri., Jul 23, 2004 at 5:50 PMJeff's run a solid, positive campaign. I'm hopeful that we won't see a last-second, negative switch. I'm not suggesting we're seeing that, outright; just the feelers that indicate something negative's out there. Keep it about you, keep it positive, Jeff!

Posted by Yoni on Sat., Jul 24, 2004 at 4:38 PMI feel badly for Jeff. Carnahan has had his campaign calling people all over the district for weeks trying to claim that that Jeff is the Ralph Nader of the race. I think that Russ's support is falling apart so quickly that the situation has pretty much reversed itself. From what I hear, Jeff is on the verge of surging past Russ and the rest of the field. Anyone holding onto the farce of Russ Carnahan as a credible candidate is holding onto the empty promise of a family name. A vote for Russ takes away from Jeff and benefits the social conservatives in this race. Joan Barry's aggressive portrayal of Rusty's pitiful attendance record in the legislature and his misleading presentation of his record is a fair discussion of his public record. Jeff has supported these claims and is now caught in the crossfire. 99.99% of what he is doing is positive. I hope people will keep focused on this and not candidates like Russ who have nothing to say or offer. This race means so much for St. Louis for years to come. I hope the voters focus on the difference's in ability between Jeff, Russ and the social conservatives in the race.
Posted by Beth on Sat., Jul 24, 2004 at 10:08 PMYou've been doing this Beth, but the best thing or Jeff is for people to meet him--exactly because it has nothing to do with anything, but selling Jeff. Which is the key. I think someone had to say something since the big press fell down on the Carnahan story, but it shouldn't spiral beyond that.
Posted by ArchPundit on Mon., Jul 26, 2004 at 3:45 AMI completely agree regarding selling Jeff. If we could get everyone in the district to meet him, the race would be over. Has anyone seen the VHS campaign documentry that the Smith campaign is dropping. It is very powerful and very entertaining. It does as good a job of capturing Jeff for those who don't meet him as I think they could ask for. Every undecided or Carnahan voter I know who has seen it is now voting for Jeff. Many of them are askig for yard signs or sending checks as well. I would urge anyone who has not seen it to get their hands on one.
