Stoll gets 9th ward nod

Press Release from the Stoll camp:

STOLL SOLIDIFIES ST. LOUIS CITY SUPPORT

City Endorsement Broadens Candidate’s Base

St. Louis – 3rd Congressional District Candidate Steve Stoll this week received the nod from the Democrats of the 9th Ward.

“Steve is the apparent leader in this race – and he is proving to be the candidate who appeals to the entire District, not just the City or the County,” said Pat Ortman, 9th Ward Committeewoman. “I am proud of the work he has done for St. Louis Schools, and dedication he has to his constituents. I look forward to having him as my congressman.”

“No other of the candidates seeking the 3rd CD have as much experience as Senator Stoll. He has lived in the St. Louis area his entire life, and he has been making solid decisions on tough issues for 12 years in the Missouri Legislature. No other candidate can say that, because no other candidate has done that,” Ron Auer, 9th Ward Committeeman, and House colleague of Stoll’s. “Steve has seen continued success in his bid for the 3rd Congressional seat. Long ago he locked up the southern third of the District, and now he is taking on steady support from St. Louis City.

I read this as: "We throw caution to the wind and support... the perceived frontrunner!" The Committeepeople in the Fighting Ninth are really going out on a limb with this one.

hmmm.

According to

http://www.house.state.mo.us/bills99/member99/mem059.htm

Ron Auer was the State Rep for the 59th district. That seat is now Russ'. I'd say that this endorsement is a lot more than the 9th ward just getting behind a frontrunner. They're taking a pretty big chance by not supporting their own state representative. I think this endorsement speaks a different message fairly loudly.

"Steve is the apparent leader in this race..." Perhaps I'm simply reading that line differently than you. Sounds like putting the biscuits in the winning basket.

The 9th ward, you must remember, is Martie Aboussie's former ward. Ron Auer got to be 59th District state rep because of Martie. Ken Ortmann - Pat's husband - is 9th ward alderman now because of Martie. Martie Aboussie still has a great deal of pull there, even though he now lives in the county. And his sister, of course, is Joyce Aboussie, the woman behind-the-scenes at Gephardt central.

As far as I know, Gephardt himself has not endorsed anyone. But this seems to suggest - not surprisingly - that some of his backers will back Stoll over Carnahan.
