No November ballot proposal from the Symphony
Dear Member of Citizens for the St. Louis Symphony Ballot Proposal --
The Executive Committee of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra has
decided not to pursue a ballot proposal to ask voters to support adding
the Symphony to the Zoo-Museum District.
A year ago the Symphony polled the community and was encouraged by the
response. It was so encouraging that we formed a coalition to pursue
asking voters for support of the Symphony through a property tax. Over
the past year, the environment has changed. Our recent polling indicates
that while there is still substantial support for the Symphony, voters
are worried about other things. People are concerned about the
uncertainties of the economy, world issues, state and local budget
deficits, and the funding of public schools. This does not mean that
the image of the Symphony has gone down, but that voters have other -
and more pressing -- priorities.
The Symphony has concluded the risks of mounting a campaign this
November are too great. Asking voters to make a very hard choice right
now could jeopardize all of the positive feelings the community now has
about the Symphony as evidenced by the Taylor matching funds, the
Robertson announcement and the positive media stemming from it, and the
1,000 businesses and individuals like you who signed on as members of
our coalition.
While the decision is disappointing, the Symphony's first commitment is
to an orchestra that is both artistically excellent and an active
community partner. For the Symphony, this decision means that it will
continue to rely on friends and donors to help the Symphony meet the
challenge of long-term financial stability. The Symphony will need to
aggressively fundraise to sustain the music education programs for
children and free community concerts that so many enjoy.
We are grateful for your membership in our coalition and look forward to
your ongoing support of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.
