And now a message from my brother

Over a recent weekend vacation we had a family discussion about Walmart with my dad and my brother on one side, my wife and I on the other, and my mother sitting on the fence.

In any event, here's something my brother just sent me from businessweek.

A major, national business publication is sympathetic to Wal-Mart? I wouldn't have guessed it! Thanks for posting, though, Dave. It's always good to read about and listen to both sides of an argument, including the wrong side.

Wal-Mart may help bring revenue to communities, but this corporation tends to locate stores on the outskirts of town, destroying "Main Street" and moving the focus away from community. I've seen this trend occur over and over in small towns where we do city planning work. The only place I know where Wal-Mart is a community hang-out is Kirkwood, MO (and only because there is nothing else to do there, and it's a college town). This doesn't even begin to uncover other issues with Wal-Mart, like their union-busting and lack of health benefit provisions for employees. They are accelerating the race to the bottom in America. I've been boycotting Wal-Mart for more than a decade - JOIN ME!
